CANYON CITY NEWS. PECEMBER 1. 905. THE TEXAS PANHANDLE. THE II EST. PART OF IT The Central Plains. The Texas Panhandle, and especially that portion of it known as the Plains, fs now at tracting world wide attention. Imagine a gently rolling prairie some two hundred miles either way and almost without a break, with no rocks, chalky places or bad spots, but all tine land and you baye before you what is called here the Plains Country. The soil is what would be termed a black sandy loam; in some places, for several miles perhaps, it is black and sticky (called tight) and in otOer places tree, owing to its proportion of sand, but all ot it is very fertile. At present all of this country the Plains except where in cultivation, is covered with a close turf of mesquite grass, making the finest pasturage in the world, summer and winter, and only equaled in nutritious value by the celebrated grazing grounds of Australia. Mrs. Nora Gardner describes an experience while hunting big game in the central provinces of India as follows: "We had been shooting for borne months and up to a certain date had had very good luck. Ti gers and other beasts were all plenti ful, and our bag was a good one. Suddenly our luck changed. Blank day followed blank day, not because we had missed easy shots or had to reproach ourselves for losing wound ed boasts, but simply that we had Keen nothing in the shape of a wild animal to shoot.
