...LOCAL TOPICS John 11. Adams M. D.. who has been spending several months in the best medical institute in San Francisco in the interest of his profession, stepped from the east-bound passenger train yesterday morning where he was met by a number of friends. His first act was to walk straight to the court house and register a vote for McKinley. The doctor is looking hearty and well and all are pleased to see the genial gentleman home again. He will in all probability remain here perman ently as he feels that his course of study is finished and that the rapid progress of AJams county with a heavy immigration pouring in all the while makes the field looks promis ing. The Manhattan election ball given at the opera house Tuesday evening was a success in every sense of the word. One hundred couple, lovers of the terpsichorean art, tripped away the midnight hours to strains of de lightful music by Driscoll's orchestra of Spokane. Election returns were posted as they arrived. ...LOCAL TOPICS A number of friends of Mr. nnd Mrs. J. G. Bennett surprised them at their country home last evening, it being the thirty-fifth anniversary of their marriage. So stealthily did the in vaders approach that the surprised couple received no intimation of be ing surrounded by auglft save the night and somewhat distant coyotes, until the melody of a serenade by some of Bitzville's leading musicians who do not belong to the band, broke open the door. Being cordially wel comed by Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, the self-invited guests made the hours pass merrily by vieing with each other in a display of original or borrowed pleasantry. The chief feature of the evening waß termed "pot luck," each one present being called upon to con tribute to the "entertainment pot" some refreshment, either mental, spiritual or culinary, and also get what they could out of it. It goes to say . that the pot and partakers were generously supplied, with the follow ing jolly people to keep it stirred: Mes...
