He re-asserted his in tention to do his duty even if it involved the Whitehouse responsibility. He spoke in severe terms of the kuklux, which he said the Government ought to extirpate at once and forever, and spoke in severer and more sarcastic terms in condemnation of the thieving carpet-baggers who plunder and prey upon the negroes and poor whites while pretending to be anxious for their education and the salvation of their souls.
