Grant, who died July 24. 1885, aftor nearly a year's Buffering, of cancer at the root of the tongue. In May, 1877, when his sec end term of office had expired, General Grant and his wife made a tour of the world, during which tho great soldier was received by all nations as a sove reign. On no titled man have such honors heen heaped as on this citizen of the United States. The speaker was a tall, imperious - looking woman, and the girl whom she addressed had just tied the J rich strings of an elegant bonnet for her inspection in the full-length mirror. "Very weil, mad am; I can alter it for you in one moment" The girl's tone was fully as haughty and cold as madam's own, and" there was not a symptom of cringing in the proud face of "that shop-girl." as Mrs. Monteith mentally designated her. The Xavy Department is something like a man having a coat with eight pockets in it The depart ment consists of eight bureaus, each one having separate appropriations made by Congress for the purchase of every thing it requires. There is one thing that every bureau has an appropriation for, and that is the item of ice. The contract is let every year and each office in the navy yard at Mare Island is allowed a cer tain quantity. Of course it is all paid for out of different appropriations. Last year the contract was let to a party in Vallejo. and we now wish to explain the modus operandi of pay ment, for the benefit of our ...
