Three Hundred Miles of Oil Pipe. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 21 October 1873

Three Hundred Miles of Oil Pipe. The system of transporting oil, by means of pipesiaid over moderate distances, has been iv practice in the oil districts of Pennsylvania fur several years, proving a convenient means of carriage ami a profitable investment for large amounts of capital. While the success of the scheme has thus been demonstrated as applied tocoparativcly small sections of country, it remains yet to be determined whether the project can be carried out on a gigantic scale over more extended space. With the late discoveries in Butler county, Pennsylvania, it appears that the* interest in the plan, suggested some years ago, has revived, and the idea of transporting oil through Iron pipes, from Tltusville, over tlie Alleghanies to Philadelphia on the sea board, v distance °» 260 miles, is now exciting considerable attention. Mr. G. \V. Piatt, an engineer quite well known throughout the country from the fact of having superintended the construction of the Holley waterworks s...

Our Success. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 22 October 1873

Our Success. With unconcealed pleasure the Herald announces that already it issues each day to regular, paying subscribers, a greater number of copies than any other newspaper published in Los Angeles; and that its subscription list is increasing at the rate of about 100 per week. Before the first month of its publication shall end, the present indications are that it will have more legitimate paying subscribers than both our contemporaries combined. This proves that the citizens ef Los Angeles are willing to support enterprise, anil that when money is freely expended in their behalf, they are willing to bear their proportion ofthe expense. On the first of November the Herald will be on a paying basis; that is, its receipts will fully meet itsoutgoes, giving, of course, no return for the money invested or the labor of the proprietors. This is an event rarely happening in newspaper annals in the second month of existence. Thus is set at rest all doubts of the financial success of the...

The City and the Cas. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 22 October 1873

The City and the Cas. If ever proof were wanted of the disgraceful results of the squabble between the City Fathers and the gas company, that proof was obtainable last evening, between the hours of 8 and 9. At the risk of incurring the displeasure of both corporations, bet in defense of the interests of the citizens, theHfeRALD protests against this Egyptian plague of darkness continuing any longer. If necessary, a meeting should be called, and the gas company forced to compromise with the city, or the city with the gas company. No mountain-side in a thunder-storm was ever darker than was this city last night. It was dangerous to life and limb. No one could walk a block without feeling his way, and the crossings were especially dangerous on account of the hacks going to or from Madame Bishop's concert. For what do citizent pay taxes? Why should they suffer from this dispute? I'nless energetic action is taken in this matter, the City Fathers will continue to punish the gas company, a...
