DANGEROUS APES,. 'Two' monkeys'of the "lion-killer" Ipecies, with tempers so fierce and teeth' so shaprp that no one has yet sum mooed-the courage to approach s them within reaching distance, were recently received from Europe and taken to a -Philadelphia- menagerie.-- The now comners, manifeated their peculiar dis tinction 'as beiing the only animal which possess the pluck to attack the monarch of the forest the moment they entered the stable. They were contined in. a cage which contained a strong woodlol partition: completely separating them. They wore placed on the floor within r 'foot of.tyo fierce and Gintm~ttablie hons, who succeeded indifferently well in liv ing in the nsame comlpkrtment.. No sooner had they discovered the proximity of their natural eneines tlhan they ele vated themselves upon their hind quarters and gave vent to terrific, semi lhuman- cries. There is nothing fresh in mining to report. I was shown to-day a pretty piece of geometrical draining executed by an old man of seventy, named Mill thorpe, on his son-in-law's ground hert. A STARTLING DISCOVERY. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 18 May 1883

A.STARTLN (. IN bT flflIpT'r"; - A rathor sad affair took place in one of ofr stioets the other day. A young lady with her arms full of bundles emerged fromn a dry goods store, when one of them fell on the side-walk with out her noticing it. Just behind her Was aiyoung man, and a Belfast young man who is not polite is not anything, and he quickly stopped forward to pick it up. Now, a bundle done up in a pieceof paper withadrygoods advertise ment on it is apparently as harmless as a mother's spanking, and there it lay as guileless as an angle-worm on a side. walk after a rain. Just as he stooped to pick it up there wasarustlingot the paper, the twist began to come out of the ends, and in another instant a bright fvd thing, a sort of a cross be tween a baloon and a devil-fish flew in to the air before his eyes, and a number ten, 36 inches, double-jointed, duplex, elliptic, stoeel-bowed, bustle-attachment, dollar-and-a-half red-headed hoopskirt waltzed around and gyrated and opened and...

OLD STORIES RETOLD. Hated's Dream. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 25 May 1883

OLD STORIES RETOLD. At the foot of one of the gigantice mountains in Asia stood the beautiful cottage of Hafed the agri and the prosperous. He had reared the home and lived and studied in it for over 80 years. During all this time the sun had never forgotten to visit him daily, the harrvest ihad not faelled, the pestilence, had never de. stroyil, and the mountain stream had, never dried up. His wife and son and daughter were such as were not to be found in all that province. No youth could rein tire horse, hunoot, and chase, or delight the social circle like this son ; and no daughter could be found so perfect, beautiful, bright, anid joyous na this one. But who can ensure earthly happiness f In cue short ,wecek lIafal was stripped of all his joys. Iia 'wife went to see a neighbour's new whito'pcncoek antl took cold, then a quick fever, atld diedal; and the son and daughter both returned from the biurial of their mother fatiguedl nd siok!; their nurse gave them, as she thought, a si...

No Title [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 25 May 1883

A New Zealander's programme is thus described by James litngstnt : I watch him come out of his wherry at nine' in the morning, and walk thence to some spot a few yards dis. tant. Wrapping his blanket around him he will there sit for an hour or more, looking at nothing particular, and imitative only of a cat upon the hearthrug. At the end of that time the spirit will move him to arise and walk another 50 yards, where the same perlormance of another squat down, and another hour's sleepy look around, will be repeated. He will thou return to his wharry, to rest there after such labours until midday meal be ready. In'many respects there is a remark. able rsermblance between the Rio Grsndo and the Alexicans Both are frequently dry, with the difference that the river needs water, while the Mexican requires aqua diontte or me.acle. The Rio Orande is guilty of sudden risings, so are the Mexicans. Both uprisings desolate the country, and cause the loss of much life and property. After the riv...

FARM CALEN'DAR FOR JUNE. The following we clip from 2ie .Asgrealesiaes Ag.4ricultural '"Atual, a very useful work, edited by R WV. Emerson Macivor, F.I.C., F.C.S. : "The work of hedge planting should not be delayed in the latest districts beyond the early portion of June. To get. the laid deeply stirred and made line on the surface to a width of four or five feet are the first requirements according to the hints already given. Of kinds the white thorn is admitted to be the best; but the Caffee thorn is cotming into considerable notice, and bas many good points It is a hardy grower, and stock do not care about interfering with it, oven in its early stages. Thisis is an important consider etion when the cost of the guard fences required with some hedge plants are taken into account. The osage orange also makes a good hedge, but it does snot do well in any but the richest soils. Single rows either for white or Cafre thorn are preferable to double ones, and the plants should be put in a...
