HOPEFUL. To the Editor.. [Newspaper Article] — The Charleville Courier — 29 August 1896

HOPEFUL. To the Editor.. Sir,-A friend has just sent me the Chicago Droverf Journal, which is said to be one of the 'livest' of stock papers. . It is noteworthy that whilst from Januaiy < 1st to : Junp 30th, 156,644 Texan cattle were sold throagh the Union Saleyards of Chicago, and nnder a Government inspection, which is char acterised as ' very close,', there is no mention whatever of ticks or tick fever. In one place there is reference to thorn cattle being''in quarantine,' bat what-, ever the regulations are, it is evident that they do-not,hamper the trade, since the 1896 sales are 3000 head more than those of the like period in '95,. which in turn are 2000 ahead of '94. May we hope that Professor Wallace's theory is proving correct and the Texan herds becoming immune? The following brief particulars of the Chicago. trade may be of interest: The receipts from January to' June, '96, were : Cattle, 1,234,916 ; hogs, 3,839 466; sheep, 1,743,796 j horses, 70,927. Sales are...

ONE ON THE MASHER. [Newspaper Article] — The Charleville Courier — 29 August 1896

ONE ON THE HASHES. The "New Woman'' shows to the best advantage when brought into contact with a certain kind of man that hag cumbered tbe earth from the beginning, without being materi ally affected by the moral advance raentof his race. One of this sort entered a car the other day and seeing a tall, brilliant-looking girl seated in tbe for corner, be took the vacant place next her. accosting her exactly as if he j were an acquaintance. To his surprise she answered politely, and for a couple of streets they affably discussed the weather. Then she signalled the driver to stop, and got out, fol lowed by the inwardly astonished masher, who bad expected only to be repulsed with the cold stare cultivated by tbe avenge town-bred young woman for use in such emergencies. When they reached tbe curbstone she gave him a second surprise. " I have stopped on the beat of the largest policcman on the town,"said , she, in a voice he wonld not have recognised as , tbat of his companion in the 'bus,...
