NUMBERING A CROWD. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 17 April 1919

NUMBERING A CROWD. — It i® remarkable how the averag<j civilian over-estimates the number of (persona in a big procession. Take, ■ (or example, a recent demonstration; in London. It was said that there were 15,000 men in line, and some of the enthusiasts put it even at 20,000. But it is easily to catimate puch ■numbers approximately. Here is tho rule &e laid down in tlio "Field Ser vice Regulations/' of the Unitctj. States Army. "The strength of a body of troops may be estimated from the length of time it takes to pass a given point. '♦Assuming that infantry irf column of four companies, occupies half yard per man, cavalry' one yard per trooper, and artilery in single column fcer gun or ce»isson, a given point would bo passed in one minute by 175 infantry, 110 cavalry at. n walk, 200 ' cavalry at a trot, and Rvb guns qr caissons." Allowing for spacing between con)? panics, battalions, and regiments, all of which, according to mathematical rule, it takes a regiment...
