Farewell to Sister Brownell \ There was a good attendance at the farewell function to Sister Brownell on Monday last. Sister Brownell has been in charge of the Infant Welfare Centre for some time. During her stay here she became a firm favourite with parents and children who' very much regret her departure. Sister Brownell was presented with a cosmetic case in recogni tion of the fine service rendered, and as a token of appreciation and esteem. Mrs. Davy made the presentation, and in d<ing so, referred to the great help rend ered by Sister Brownell at the, Centre. Cr. Weeks, speaking on behalf of the Alexandra Shire Council, endorsed Mrs. Davy's remarks. Mr. J. W. 21st BIIT1'TIDAY The little town of Heyfield was all agog on the night of Nov. 23, the occasion being Barry Thomp son's 21st birthdry. The cele bration took the form of a dinner given him by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Thompson, of Yarck. The usual toasts were nonored, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The resi- I dents of Heyfield presented Barry with a suitable travelling case. Several years ago Barry attend ed the Alexandra High School and was at all times a keen stu dent. Later he joined the staff of 'the Commercial Banking Company -of Sydney. Avoca being his first branch. He was the recipient of many congratulatory messages. Good luck, Barry !

NEW ZEALAND WEDDING IN ALEXANDRIA. Alexandra was invaded by New Zea landers recent.. It was a peaceful in vasion, however, and for a very happy purpose. They came to assist at the wedding of Miss Audrey Webster, of Wellington, New Zealand, and Mr. Anthony..Grayburn, of Temuka, N.Z., an officer of the N.Z. Forestry Depart ment attending the Forestry school at Canberra. Miss Webster had been a member of the Rev. W. H. P. McKeb zie's congregation when he was a min ister there some years ago, and so Alexandra drew together not only the bride and bridegroom but the bride's: parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Webster, and her sister, Mrs. Kempthorne, who acted as matron of honor, and several New Zealand forestry students from Canberra, one of whom Mr. John Groom, of Christchurch, N.Z., acted as best man. Mr. R. SPARKE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 13 January 1950

Mr. R. SPARKE. The death occurred recently at War burton of Mr. Bob Sparke,.at the age of 70 years. The late Mr. Sparke was born at Marysville, and was well known in the Alexandra district. He was a great worker for charity, being a life gover nor of many metropolitan hospitals. He was also an ardent worker for the Upper Yarra Bush Nursing Hospital, and was hon. secretary of the ball held for many years for that institu tion. The late Mr, Sparke was also an outstanding cricketer and wood chopper in days gone by. He was a brother of Mr. Syd Sparke, of Thorn ton.

Mrs. V. R. NEWMAN. A very large number of most beauti ful floral tributes and a large assem. bly of relatives and friends spoke vol umes for the respect in which the late Mrs. Newman was held. A husband and two sons are left to mourn the loss of one who has suffered patient ly for a number of years, and who died at the early age of 52, on Mon day, 2nd January, 1950. After a service at the Presbyterian Church the funeral moved off to the Alexandra cemetery, where the casket was borne to its last resting place by Messrs. A. Nicholas, G. V. Sawers, S. Sawers, S. Newman, J. R. Findlay and R. Sawers, while the pall-bearers were-Messrs. S. Savage, W. Newman; H. Sawers, J. Cameron, R. Robb and H. McLean. ALEXANDRA STANDARD PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. A fire was noticed at Cathedra' Lane, Taggerty, on Saturday evening last. The Forestry em ployees were promptly at the scene, and the fire extinguished. There was evidence that camp ers had been in the vicinity. On Sunday morning last a fire broke out on Mr. James. Kelly's property, Alexandra. About 30 acres of grass were destroyed. The Alexandra Rural Fire Bri gade put the fire out. Eileen Andrews, 14 years of age, fifth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Andrews, of "The Haven," Taggerty,. who was awarded a junior Government scholarship at Alexandra Higher Elementary School, and is now a boarding student at the Academy of Mary Immaculate, Melbourne, has gained her Intermediate cer tificate with a pass in each of the eight subjects for which she en tered. Last week the Pharmacy re sults showed that Mr. D. Mayson had passed his second year with honors, and had been awarded the Rocke Tompsitt Scholarship for the best course done by coun try stud...
