Wonthaggi Firemen and Bandsmen at Ballarat. ANNUAL FIRE BRIGADE DEMONSTRATION. A HIGHLY POPULAR RE-UNION. [Newspaper Article] — Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser — 19 March 1915

Wonthaggi Firemen and j Bandsmen at Ballarat. . ANNUAL FIRE BRIGADE DEMON STRATION. A HIGHLY POPULAR RE-UNION. The annual fire brigade demonstra tion, which this year was held at Ballarat. and for which beautifully fine weather, prevailed, was a highly successful re-union, all the arrange- j ments in connection with it being ad mirably carried out by the energetic and persevering officials most closely interested. The great annual event occupied the greater nart of last week, commencing on Tuesday, and, after a strenuous time for- the officers and men, terminated on Friday. There was an enormous attendance of firemen, and only a few brigades throughout the State of Victoria'l'ailed to attend. The review, which was held on the Ballarat City on Tuesday,, was indeed a very fine spectacle, and well worth journey ing a long way to see. The different colored uniforms of ' hundreds of well trained firemen, which literally glit tered under the rays of a brilliant sun, presented a sight whic...

THE FLAVOR OF APPLES. [Newspaper Article] — Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser — 19 March 1915

THE FLAVOR OF APPLES. Tlie removal of superabundant leaves round the fruit will work wonders in the way of- improved flavor, as well as color, and the gathering and storing need more attention than is usually given them. Early apples must be gathered early and late ones late is a maxim that has no exceptions. Early varieties must be taken to the store before they part willingly from the tree. They will then ripen gradually and /ill a longer season than if left till all arc ripe. Well-placed gruits ripen earlier, and should be gathered first. For the late sorts the reverse treatment is necessary. The later the season, the longer must they be allowed to hang. The}' will then, in favorable years, keep fresh and 'crisp, and avoid the shrivelled skin and wiry flesh which is too often found in these vari eties. These defects may be caused by overcropping, the cause being the same, namely, an insufficient supply of food material in the fruit. A cool and rlark room should be their final goa...

YOUNG PIGS BEST. Young animals make more pounds of grain from their food than when older. Dean Honry, of Wisconsin, gathered a lot of data on this and found that 38 Ib. pigs required 203 lb. of feed to make 100 lb. of grain; 7S-lb. pigs re quired 400 lb. of feed; 128-lb. pigs, 4"7 II). of feed; 174-lb. pigs. 482 lb.: 220- I lb. pigs, 498 lb.; 271-lb. pigs, 511 lb.; | and for the 330-lb. pigs it took 535 lb. I of food to make 100 lb. of grain, or nearly twice as much as for the 3S-lb. pig. This omphasises the importance of pushing the pigs from the start in order to make the most economical gains. FOR WOMEN [Newspaper Article] — Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser — 19 March 1915

sV.y "Ambro6LE«.") Iu the November issue of the '"Nine teenth ? Century" is found a remark ably suggestive article', written by Jliss Edith Sellars, on cetruin large aud suc cessful experiments in cheap _ catering which have been carried on for many years in some of the cities of the Con tinent, notably in Christiania and Vienna. Whatever else the Briton may pride himself (or let- us confers, herself), upon, it is not in the matter of cheap and efficient cooking. As an example of this the writer quotes the case of a Belgian family, the feeding of which was entrusted to a well-meaning London housewife, who .starved her poor gue->ts on expensive tinned jams and indigestible beef steak. Somo Iciml expert succeeded in having the Belgians subsidised to look after them selves:. Immediately the exiles put themselves upon a tasty and nourish ing diet at something under one half what their English hostess spent. Jf ' the English woman gets a permanent idea of how to live pleasantly and th...
