TnANSeCLeDENTALISs.-Tile strong side of tiransccudentalism is that it does act powerfully on the imagination. It is un questionable that men, and women also, are ilummensely influenced by the terms which Transcendentalists employ, and of which they profess to justify the use. The weak sih.uof transcndentalism is that no adher ent to this system of philosophy has ever yet succeeded in making a statement which commands general assent. Plain, matter-of fact peop.s can make assertions which it is imonossibe to controvert. Thus, that twice two sce Isuu is an indisputable fact of this char.uacter. And though some captious cri tie may say "What for?" yet the general statement is an unchallengeable one. J. 1I. Wrrrow, of Melbourne House, Warragul, is no baretaced Transcendentalist, and when hlie announces to the public that the thou sand and one articles that hlie has for sale in his world-renowned store are the cheapest and the best procurable, he makes one of those stateusents which, lice...

SINGING lU, CaIJRCHE3., TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. Srm,-I seo in your issue of tie 17th ult., a resident of WYarragul draws attention to the very indifferent manner in which the musio is. rendered in the churches of that place. I quite agree with him in his re marks, and would confirm what he states by quoting the cusee at YWateroo. A few months bhck we were inprecisey a similar positionl Service was held in the Mechanics' Insti tuteon alternate Sundays by the Church of England and IWeslejan bodies, at both of which ,.the singing, was simcly atrocionis. The members of the Church of England, however, invested in a cabinet organ, of which free use was given. and availed of by the Wesleyano fortheir services. aMe'nbers of botllh denominations joined thue choir, the result being a srriee which (andl I think, Sir, yos ,an testify to this) would do credit t many bothll larger and older townships.
