y^LOOP M"ONEMENT NECESSAB* BY PASTOR RUSSELL. T<;it: "Without the shedding of blood there ii no remission of sins." (Heb. ix., 22.) • The Scriptures de clare that the life is tn the blood (Lev. xvii. 11); hence the shedding of blood re presents death. So death may be spoken of as the shedding of blood, regardless of "whether or not a fcingle drop of blood be spilt literally. Thus the presentation .of the blood of the sacrifices of old repre sented . the offering to God of their lives as a typical offset to the forfeited life of Adam and his cliiM ren, who lost life through his disobedience. ISRAEL'S ATOXKMKXT SACRIFICES. Every year the Jews celebrate their Atonement Day, by which their sins ai\; supposed to be covered afresh for the year begun. The underlying thought is a re minder that they aresinners, and that without the sheddjng of blood, without a sacrificial death, there can be no Divine forgiveness of sins. for more than sixteen - centuries Israel observed these ty...

TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS. [Newspaper Article] — Rutherglen Sun and Chiltern Valley Advertiser — 3 February 1914

TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS. Sir,—On reading ft circular issued by the legal manager of the Great Southern G.M. Company, Eutherglen, calling a meeting to deal with the closing dqwn of the mine, I \yas surprioed at the scant information given in it. To begin with, there is no mention of a reef from 18in. to 3ffc. wide which has been tested on different occasions and yielded from 18dwt. to 17dwt per ton of quartz. This in itself, with a battery on the mine, would be a payable proposition. And, again, they do not say that the miners are losing an enormous amount of time on account of bad air, and that the diffi culty could be overcome by putting down another air-shaft. How can it be expected to pay whep, they are not getting nearly the amount of wash nut? Yet the top expenses go on just the same. In the last half-yearly report the share holders were led to believe that there was a considerable period of profitable work ahGad, but are now called together to be informed that the mine is t...

RUTHERGLEN MINE CLOSES. [Newspaper Article] — Rutherglen Sun and Chiltern Valley Advertiser — 3 February 1914

RUTHERGLEN MINE CLOSES. (From the " Argus." Rutherglen, Friday.—The Great Southern gold mine, for many years onp of the leading alluvial mines in the State, on Thursday practically closed down. For some months past the wash operated on has been of poor quality, and the management, owing to the distance of the working faces from the shaft, bad air and increased water, advised the directors to close the mine down. The directors decided upon calling an extra ordinary meeting of shareholders for February 17 to discuss the situation of the mine. Therefore surprise was ex pressed on Thursday that work should be stopped before the holding of the meeting. The mine has produced over 136,000oz of gold, and paid .£67,950 in dividends, against a called-up capital of .£99,750, Locally tha opinion is that the closing of the mine is premature, and if another air shaft were put down in the north end of the mine there would be several years' profitable work for s large number of miners.

VITICULTURE IN THE COMMONWEALTH. INTERVIEW WITH MR ALAN BURGOYNE, [Newspaper Article] — Rutherglen Sun and Chiltern Valley Advertiser — 3 February 1914

VITICULTURE IN THE COM MONWEALTH. Interview with Mr Alan Burgoyne. Mr Alan Burgoyne,- M.P., as is well known to all our vignerons, arrived in Australia some time about the middle of October last. . A representative of the Wine and Spirit News and Australian Vigneron" visited him immediately on his arrival, to renew old acquaintance and give him glad welcome. Anything in the form of an interview, however, was at that time unwelcome to Mr tsurgoyne. Before expressing himself in any way, he desired to go among the vignerons of the three leading wine pro ducing States, and see for himself how matters really stand. He has carried out his set programme, and only a few days ago, on the eve of his departure for England (January 21), we had the pleasure of enjoying an hour's conversa tion with him. He is beyond doubt enthusiastic about Australia and its future prospects, viticulture especially. His face glowed with rapture many times when' recounting the pleasures he experienced since his ar...
