THE FRANCO-RUSSIAN ALLIANCE. LONDON, August 30. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 2 September 1897

THE FRANCO-RUSSIAN AL- LIANCE. LONDON, August jo. A formal alliance between Russia and France has been declared, after interviews between President Faure and the Czar, and M.' Hanotaux and Prince Muravieff. "There is general rejoicing in Paris and decorations and extensive illuminations will greet President Faure's return. Tuesday, when M. Faure returns, has been proclaimed a national holi- day. The European newspapers in general consider the alliance fatal to Germany's aspirations. 'The German newspapers have adopted a reserved attitude, though many are willing to join in the con- gratulations owing to a phrase injthe Czar's speech referring to the main- tenance of the world's peace. Some papers believe the alliance to be both offensive and defensive, replacing the military defensive alliance signed" by Count - Degiers and Al. Casmir Perrier.
