Sunshine United v. St. Davids [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 31 May 1924

Sunshine United v. SL. Davi s The'iabovc match-Wan played beL:e a large crowd of spectators on the Sun rshine football ground last Satur day. The following players lined ur, to defend Sunshine's. honour:-Pyle, Lawrie, Fulton, Drennen, iiu:rns (cap tain), Adderley, Donald. Barr, Chis holm, Simpson and Nicol non. The result, a draw of 2 goals apiece, was by no means a credit to the local team, as they had far more' opportunities of piling up a very.welcome win -if they had persevcied. At half-time the score stood at 1 goal in favour of St. David's, and shortly after resumption the latter team scored another goal through a penalty given against Law. rio for handling the ball. Thereafter Sunshine United woke up to the fact that it really was a serious egame of soccer-smelt the oplposing goal, and proceeded to equalise matters by scor ing two goal;n through Barr and Nic olson, in quick succession.; But again we must complain, of the lack of cn Ihusiasm dislplayed by the Urnited, and the ...

THE COMBINED DRILL AND CULTIVATOR Its Value in New South Wales [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 7 June 1924

THE COMBINED DRILL AND CULTIVATOR Its Value in New South Wales By G. E. Stephens. When the farmers of New South Wales wake up to the advantages of the combine drill it is safe to prophesy that no farm will be considered com plate without one. Even after a far mer has bought one he is apt to fail to make full use of it through being unable at once to wean himself from old methods. The soils of New South Wales being mostly a deep loam are peculiarly suited for the use of this machine, and they should prove an even greater suc cess there than they have proved in Victoria. The right time to start using the drill is in September or October, when the fallow can be thor oughly worked and lifted up with the cultivating tynes working fairly deep. This will leave the fallow fairly clean during harvest time, when without this cultivating, and in response to the summer rains, which usually occur in the New South Wales wheat areas, the fallow is apt to get completely out of hand. During January ...

(All Ttlghtr. iUservod.) ,+++ THE +++ FOR ToE IONTERS -+------ By ESTHER MILLER, Author of "Living Lies," "The B3eau' tiful Claimant," "What Was Her Sin ?" "The ,ove Chase," "The Quicksands of Life," &c. &c. PART 3. "Why ? You are not married yet. It is better to break an engagement than to ruin your life I" "Hush I" she said, and his eyes sank to the hurried rise and fall of her breast. "It is disloyal to Bhol to." "One can he disloyal to oneself," he said. "That is worse." She moved away, and he did not follow her then, but during the next few days he pursued her secretly at every opportunity. Whenever Lady Sherwell's duties as hostess forced her to be with her older guests he found means to be with Violet, and before the week was over his daring aim was accomplished. He had taken the girl's heart by storm, and he knew it. She was his, as she had never been his brother's. Every time their hands met he knew it, every time his eyes brought the colour to her face or s...

Bargain Rates for Trespassers [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 7 June 1924

Bargain Rates for Trespassers The criticism which has been raised by the heavy fines of £1 and costs for the comparatively trifling offence of trespassing on railway, property is evidently bearing some fruit. At Essendon this week the fines were only 10s, and it was noticed at Sunshine Court' on Thursday the local magistrates made 10s the penalty. Taking a short cut across the rail way paddock and rails is the most frequent form of trespass.

MARIBYRNONG'S FUTURE The Woolwich of Australia [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 7 June 1924

IiARIBYR(ONG'S FUTURE The Woolwich of Australia It is evident that the Federal Government is committed to the expen diture of £450.000 within the next few years in order to provide suffi cient building construction to over take the proposed output of shcll, fuse, cartridges, etc. It is also clear that the main expenditure in connec tion with this desire to make Austra lia self-supporting in arms, ordnance, and in munitions will be centred in Maribyrnong, where the Defence De I'arlmc:et owns many acres of land. The first important work was the construction of a research laboratory at Maribyrnong at a cost of £57.000. Here investigations into the economic uses of the industrial resources o; Australia will be undertaken, while the premises will also be uLilised as a school of instruction for the various factory staffs and contractors. Slow but Sure Methods. The local manufacture of the muni Lions of war will necessarily prove slow of accomplishment. It is not mcrcly a matter of importi...

By general ahcclhmation the rose f holds pride of place amongst flowers', WViilc' gaeri?lly ? speaking its per- c fume is not so, pronounced mn these ' ' c parts as in snme of the cooler climes, yet many varieties possess charac Leristics particularly pleasing to the sense of smell, while their 'pleasing beauty is domething to he admired. As a rule they are not hard to grow, but in probhbly no class of. flowers dodes the halbt ,of the various moern bers differ somrimuch from one' another as they do amongst roses. We have now.-come to the oppor Lune time for planting .the rose tree, and hence our. consideration of the subjcct in this issue. Roses generally do best in a rather heavy clay sdil; there are exceptions, but one. can generally get 'the best re sults in such soils; The soils in most instances around Sunshine are pretty well adapted for their successfu' cul ture.
