RIDDELL Tuesday. [Newspaper Article] — Gisborne Gazette — 15 May 1914

RiDDELL 1», (From Our Own Correspondent'.) Tuesday. A form of retrenchment is now being carried out by the Chief Commissioner of Police that is meeting with much disap« pi'ovaL It is that of baring many of the country police stations, now possessing mounted constables, turned into stations of foot men, This is considered a rery doubtful retrenchment, for in most country districts the main usefulness of the polirc is in their capacity a? mount ed men, It is assumed that the bicycle will be used in place of the horse, but in a district like Itiddell, this would be ab> surd, Protests are going in from all parti against (lie proposal, and it is hoped, that this fori:! of retrenchment will not bs applied lo tliis district. During summer the services of a mounted constable can» nut be orer-rated in cases of bush fire out-breaks, It appears that serious misunderstand ings arc.;e at certain football meetings lately, «;id that the Eiddell District Associa'iou not. considered, and in its p...

WANDERING STOCK. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GAZETTE. [Newspaper Article] — Gisborne Gazette — 15 May 1914

WASDERiyGr STOCK. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GAZETTE. Sib,—Beading your last report of the meeting of the G-isborne Shire Council, I can see that the action of that body with regard to wandering 3tock is highly farcical. The Inspector reported that he had impounded, in the shire yard, some young cattle that were a nuisance lying about the streets of the township at night, them out on the streets again, Did it not ocsur to the Inspector that it was his duty to take the stock to the pouudj which is only a short distance away, and that if people would not claim them thcr' they could be sold to pay expensos ? IS the councillors were really in earnest about keeping the stock off the streets; this would be done. Again, why should not all the people throughout tho shir?) who are grazing their stock along th«s roads, pay for the prirelcge ? In Melton shire, the grazing feed not only pay the ranger's expenses, but return a good revenue. Is <risborne so well off that they can pay a range...
