HOME NOTES. Winter is the season for soups, and on these cold frosty nights there is nothing more acceptable than a plate of hot. appetising soup for the first course when the family arrive home cold and hungry. The puree and many of the thick soups are most nourishing, and the stock pot can be run at small cost if one remembers to add all the odds and ends of meat and vegetables and the water in which potatoes, rice and other vege tables have been cooked. The foundation stock for most soups is made from shin of beef or the neck or knuckles of mutton, and there are various soup bones which may be obtained from the butcher. Wash and cover the meat with clean cold water, bring to boiling point, and simmer for several hours, or until the meat is quite tender; drain off the stock and skim free from fat. TELOPEA PARK SCHOOL. : OPENING OF TENNIS COURTS. PRESENTATION OF CUPS. A large attendance of school children and members of the Parents' and Citizens' Asso ciation attended at the Telopea Park school grounds on Thursday afternoon, 23rd July, on the occasion of the opening of the two tennis courts at the school, which have been con structed by voluntary labour on the part of members of the Parents' and Citizens' Asso ciation. The opportunity was also taken of presenting to the winning school houses the two handsome trophies which have been kindly donated to the school by Mr. J. Deans, and the Sheffield Plating Co. Mr. Henry, headmaster of the school, ex plained that for the purpose of competing for the trophies, the school was divided into houses, each of four groups for boys and girls, each with its own captain. SOCIAL SERVICE ACTIVITIES. DISTRICT DOINGS BLANDFORDIA A meeting was held at Blandfordia at the Telopea Park School on Wednesday, 28th July, for the purpose of forming a District Asso ciation for Blandfordia. The General Secre tary of the Canberra Social Service Associa tion explained the objects of the meeting, and stated that although at the present time the number of residents at Blandfordia was com paratively few, it had been decided to con stitute Blandfordia a district, in order to cope with the large increase of population an tlcipàted in this centre in the near future. It was decided to call a further meeting for the plirpose of adopting the district con stitution and election of officers. Mr. L. H. -?-. MOLONGLO. SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. A new class-room has been added to the Molonglo School, and equipped as an infants' department. The addition is a well-lighted and ventilated room, and will greatly mini mise winter and summer discomforts. An additional assistant (Miss W. Jones), late of Willoughby infants, has been appointed. Two Molonglo boys-Beg. Bennett won the Singles Handicap, and Stan, and Beg. Ben nett the Doubles, in the recent tennis tourna ment promoted by the Ganberra Tennis Asso ciation, and played on the Telopea Courts. Handsome silver cups are the trophies. The Molonglo school footballers met the Queanbeyan Convent team on 27th July, and defeated them by three points to two points. The Telopea Park Vigoro team journeyed to Molonglo on 30th Jul}7, and defeated the local girls by 77 to 29. A return match is to be played on 6th August, at Telopea Park. REMARKABLE WALKING RECORD. Mr. Edward Storey, head cashier with a Newcastle, England, firm of solicitors, holds the proud record of having walked to and from his work for 52 years, during which he had covered over 120,000 miles. When he began to work there were neither 'buses nor trams, so he walked the four miles to the office and the four miles back. By observations from the 'bus we are of opinion that certain residents of Ainslie are endeavouring to put this record in the shade.

WEATHER FOR JULY July was a drier month than June, the rain gauge showing a total fall of 170 points as against 190 points for the latter month, the total rainfall for the seven months of the present year reaching 1,316 points; The maximum temperature for the month was reach ed on the 22nd, when the thermometer touched 62.6 deg., the lowest temperature being ex perienced on the 19th, when the thermometer reading was 24 deg. In June the highest temperature shown was 61.5 deg., and the low est 24 deg. On the whole, therefore^ July has been a warm and dry month, though it is the middle month of the winter season. In deed, the number of bright and sunny days have been a revelation to many visitors to the capital.

TRAFFIC WARNING SIGNALS UNIFORM SYSTEM FOR CIT* HIGHWAYS. The Commission is desirous of ensuring the utmost possible safety and protection for traf fic on the Canberra Highways, and has de cided that the time is opportune for adopt ing precautionary measures with a view to n iuimising accidents. Uniformity is the keynote in the signalling apparatus, that has been chosen to serve as a warning to motorists and others approach ing intersections and other dangerous places. The signal is known as the 'i Uniform High way Signal Light," and will make its ap pearance on the city highways where and when considered necessary. MUSICAL EXAMINATION. With reference to the results of the first L.C.M. Practical Examination held at Canberra on June 21, which appeared in our last issue, it is desired to state that Marjorie Caffyn gained 91 per cent., and not 81 per cent., as previously stated. The following are the results of the 6.C.M. Theoretical Examination:-Mollie James (Junior Grade), 81 per cent. (Honours). Kathleen. Oldfield, 90- per cent. (Honours). Marjorie Caffyn, 92 per cent. (Honours). All of whom are pupils of Miss Irene E. Ker mode. Rev. Wearne, of Queanbeyan, was the supervisor.
