WOMAN'S POWER. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 20 May 1893

WOM`N'S POWER. Those' disasters which break down the spirit of a man and prostrate him hii the duslti seemi. to call fortli all the ienergies of. the softer sex, and give such. intrepidity arnd elevation to their char acter, that at times. it aproaches to. sublimity. ' Nothing can be nlore touching th-itnt&i :beholda a" oft a nd tender female, who--had--been all- weak ness and dependency, and alive- to every trivial roughness, while treading the prosperous paths 'of life, sud'denly rising in mental force to be the com forter aii-l supporter of her husband, with uonhriaking firmness to the bitterest blasts of adversity. As the vine which has long twined itS graceful foliage about the oak, and has been lifted by it in sunshine, will, when the hardy plant has been rifted by the thulderbolt, cling round it with caressing tendrils, and bind up its -shattered boughs ; it is beautifully ordered by providence that woman, who is the mere depend-ent and ornament of man in his happier ...

How long these marauders remained at large I really .annot say, yet it must have been a very brief period, seeing that the Plenty: ippeared to be the base of their- opera tions. Just fancy the old stock man with legs recurved in a style higily ornate being able to crack the st cek whip of native talent over the region where, as a boy, noiinted on the back of Washington, he skurried after warrigal bullocks, The mention of the name of thin grandest of nien gives me the chance of opening the skermish with, a little annecdote of " Wild Jack, " who was punted across the styx years ago. Brodie, when in good trin was greatly given to take rises out of folks, and one day, looking up from his new spaper he said, ' Jack, who is King of the United States?" The Sunbury News. Be Just and Fear not. SUNBURY, SATURDAY. MAY 27th, 1893. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 27 May 1893

q4 #unharq tms. Be Just and Fear not. SUNBURY, SATURDAY. MAY 27th, 1893. AT the meeting of the subscribers to the Women's Hospital last night, the worthy honorable secretary and treasurer to the cause, fMrs Synnot,. declared that the satisfactory sum of £31 had been realised from the entertainment held at Rupertswood, which makes the total local contribution to the fund £75 odd. This is, indeed, a most handsome sum from a small tommunity like Sunbury-particularly as times are wretchedly bad, what with bank failures and other failures-and those who subscribed so charitably to the needful institution are deserving of the highest commendation. However, unfortunately, assistance is again required, andl we feel sure that the people of Suubury, as on previous occasions, will give an adequate response to the call. We publish in another column of our paper an appeal from Sir W. J. Clarke, for donations for the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind, which is suffering from chronic insuffic...

SUNBURY STREET LIGHTS. At the -meeting of the Bulla Shire 'Council a discussion- anent the lights for the Sunburv Streets was held over E from our last week's issue through want of space. After the engineer had read his report (which we pre viously published) on the subject, Crt McAuliffe said, if the council was going into the extra expense of lighting they would have to strike a special rate for Sunbury.
