CRICKET. Thk cricket inatcli between tlic t-oinbined tonni from St. John's In stitute; and Grammar School and tlie Uega cloven took place on tho local wicket on Wednesday. Bega had only eight men at time of sturtiiig nnd added two pick ups on Inn rrvfkim/l TKn iii.it --1. «^.-..1 1 ...1 ;._ .. win for Bega bj- 22 runs. Tlie fielding of tho combined team was -poor, and to quoto an old gag, if they had an epidemic 'it wasn't catching.' The feature of the day was the fielding of the 'Star' and Budgkt representatives— the latter dropped all the catches that came to him and the former didn't drop any because he wouldn't go to them. Ilanken and Hancock batted best for Bcga, while Uptin, Rogers and Lawson were the pick of tho com bined team. For tho combined Uptin secured tho fine bowling average of 4 for 9, while for Bega IJnnkon secured 6 wickets cheaply. The fielding ground badly needs a bushfire through it to burn off the high dead grass. Following are the scores, Runkin being the only...

New Zealand's Fifteenth Parliament. ITS PREMIER'S LIFE. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 2 December 1905

New Zealand's Fifteenth Parliament. ITS PREMIER'S LIFE. Natuiiam.y the face to catch the eye is tho face of the Premier. If tho face docs not, his voice will without a doubt, if there is any thing on in the House. And it is a voice of untiring power, sonorous, and soft. There is a look of deter mination, '.mingled with good humor, which arrests every eye, and the smile which is over' seeking to break through the impenetrable mask hiding his intentions tantali ses you with the wonder d3 to what hois going to do next. But about the man as a strong man there is no wonder. Strength is stamped upon every line, of his face, and every curve of his sturdy frame, and has its citadul in the fine pro portions of the characteristic head. No one asked to point out the natu ral Leader of tho House of Representatives would hesitate for a moment. He would indicate tho Right Hon. Ii. J. Seddon without a second thought. After a very brief experience of the man one finds out that without him there is ...

Why Don't You Dance? [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 2 December 1905

Why Don't You Dance? (By ' An English Vicar.') It lias been wisely said that while we must travel through lifo.thcrc is no reason why we should make it a dead march. I am heartily in accord with these sentiments. The Author of life, I am convinced never meant it to be sad. Nature contradicts any such theory. The young of all animals salute life and manifest their happiness by joyous gambols. Tho' birds throw them selves against the sky in ecstacies of delight, or whirl through the air in wondrous circles, simly to show their glad feelings. Generally speak ing, the most gloomy animal is man. Englishmen are said to take their pleasures seriously. But men of ordinary intelligence arc prepared to admit that lifeshould not be wholly spent in work, that man is entitled to recreation — to some hours each week of brimming release. Dancing was, perhaps, man's earliest in dulgence. The faculty for rhythm and measured motion is deeply im planted in human nature. As soon as we meet mail on the ...
