IF any one thing could more than another jus tify Mr. D?rr? for not smeddling with the subject of education the reseIlt of the recent Protestant Conference would certainly do sop. It was in fact a sort of self constituted board of advice to the Government. There is no doubt that the object of the Conference was good enough-riz., to strike out some plan by which secular education could be carried out and religious scruples respected. Any reason p'ole compromise that could be arrived at would be most desirable; but after all it does not seem that the Conference. can propound qrny woekable scheme. Tuesday August 6.       .-(Before Messrs M'Bean, Sharpe andM'Kellar.)   Williaim Hogan was charged with feloniously wound- ing with intent to murder William Houlahan on the 27th July last.       Mr M'Donnel appeared for the prisioner. William Houlahan, sworn, said he was a farmer residing at Benalla. Hogan lived near him. On the 26th July, the prisionerwas at his house about 9 p.m. His wife and prisoner's eldest daughter was there. Hogan was the worst for drink, and wanted to send for grog. He persuaded him not, and he and prisoner's daughter went with him to his house. The prisoner sent his own little boy for grog. He remained with him till 2 or 3 in the morning. They had some words about a dray, which he sold to Hogan. He received 10 pounds, and had 5 pounds more to receive. Mr McNally was taking Hogan's property; andHogan told him, take the dray for the £5.
