Walpeup. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 12 June 1914

Walpeup. From our Correspondent. Arbor Day was celebrated at the local school on Friday last, when a number of district residents as sembled together and gave the children a good day. After lunch which was indeed a credit to those who had contributed baskets, the children were given a chance to show their paces," and a few keenly-contested races were wit- nessed in which there certainly were no "dead ones." After the   races the teacher (Mr Brocklebank) addressed the children on the ob jects of Abor Day. The school correspondent then read letters from the Director of Education and Mr John Gray, M.L.A, regretting their inability to be present at the opening of the school. Mr Cregan, in a few well chosen remarks, declared the school form ally open. Cr. Glen then addressed the gathering and in- a neat little speech wished the "school and all connected with it every success. Tree planting was the next item and Cr. Glen was invited to plant the first tree, after which the la...

The Farmers' Chance. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 19 June 1914

The Farmers' ChnnRce. The aerial fi4htas f the meti market and the shortage of stock once more emphasises the 'rnrort ance of ibe man on the land. It also appears to reflect that the ill wind, in this instance, is the chance for the small as well as the big aheepman to improve the shining hour. Unfortunately for the con sumer the terrifying present gives no hopes of better days and lower prices in the future. The outlook, in fact (according to the well-in formed), is filled with fears of still higher prices. until eventuaily the price may beat the average householder and a decreased de mand bring down the barometer a trifle. Anyhow, the sheep hreeder and stock fattener can look for ward to a rosy time for many years to come. The big squatters will no doubt seize the opportunity to stock up their runs-providing the seasons will aliow them-and pro ';bably the cattle and sheep industry will be given a mighty impetus. "It's going to be a good thing for the wheat grower if he'll only sei...
