SYDNEY INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 28 February 1857

SYDNEY INTELLIGENCE. New Publication.- A book under the title of "The     Australian Picture Pleasure Book," has just made its appearance. It consists of 200 illustrations, delineat- ing the scenery of New South Walra, portraits of pub lic characters, operatic and theatrical sketches*, shipping   natural history, Architecture, &c., the whole being en- gravings on wood, chiefly by the eminent wood en-   graver Mr. Walter Mason. These impressions are the same as appeared in the Sydney Illustrated News during the three years of its existence. They are printed on good paper, on music size, and present an amusing and interesting volume. The price is only 10s., and we should think Mr, Clarke, the publisher, of George-street, will find that the book really merits and will have an extensive sale. An amusing preface from the pen of Mr. Frank Fowler will be read with interest. Dreadful Accident.— A person mined Boyce, a bookkeeper in...

ROADS AND BRIDGES. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 4 March 1857

ROADS AND BRIDGES. This most important subject, more deeply affect ing the interests of the colonists, perhaps, than almost any other, has been passed over by the Government in the most unsatisfactory manner. For tho present necessities of the wretched roads throughout the length and breadth of New South Wales, the paltry sum of .-£4*2,000 has been voted. True, tho House is furnished with a variety of ministerial apologies and explanations, but this is the total amount placed at the disposition of the Minister for Lands aud Public Works, who is as yet not prepared to enlighten the public with what pretension of munificence this sum will be allotted for the repair of .the various road* and bridges. The excuse of deficiency in the finances of the country, pleaded by Mr. Donaldson, cannot for an instant be admitted to Inive any force, since vari ous reductions on the submitted expenditure have been made, which might be taken to increase the item for roads and bridges, and the voting of...
