Dr Brown's Experiments. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 11 June 1898

Dr Brown's Experiments.' RUITGROWERS will remember the lecture delivered by Dr A. A. Brown before the recent conference, and a number of them then agreed to supply the fruit necessary for the purpose of experimen. inug. He then explained his ideas na follows ; He said he based his experiments on the foundation that to successfully preserve fruit for any length of time depends solely upon the inhibition of the ripening process : and, further, that a knowledge, of the embryology of fruits is essential. Fruits are developed direct from the bracks, calyx and ovary, anad such fruits will keep for an indefinite period, without' being subjected to any pricem. Apples, pears, and gooseberries. are the out. come of the calyx and ovary, whilst fruits produced from the ovary alone comprise the peach, apricot, grape and plum. Apples, some varieties of pears, and generally g?ose berries, will carry well for along period ; but the last mentioned, which are from the ovary alone, ripen quickly and d...

The Embezzler's Calling. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 11 June 1898

The Embezzler's Calling. a AM an upright, sttaightfurward, nega- d tively honest member of society. I c have no bank balance; I am too good to accumflate money; I stop out late at nights to 'muse my friends, and I do not S break through and steal, because I am a respector of the law and the constable, and he game isn't good enough; and I don't embezzle, because I'm not engaged in the P monetary branch of this or any other office, and all trust funds are safe as against - G me. I do not envy the embezzler. It seems to me that he is a man who has to work lung hours, and suspect people, an I keep books s y double entry and worry. and labor under the curse of the insolveacy court, that refuge of other honest traders being barred against him. Then it's such as awKward sort Of a u.iness. An embezzler who parades the I block and backs horses at race meetings can't brag about his profession, It is all very well to tell the blooming girlhood of Collins-street that the purple and fine linen a...
