ST. PANCRAS [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 5 March 1914

ST. PANCRAS ' Mrs H. B. Irving, famous as the crea tor of the part of "Trilby" on the stage. has played many popular - roles, but none more popular than that of "pud ding lady" down St. Pancras way. The name is an invention of the chil dren, and it has stuck. It should be explained to those who don't know St. Pancras children that Mrs Irving is one of the visitors who go unobstrusively among the-poor and give valuable hints on household mar keting and cookery. She related some of her experiences to a "Daily News" representative: "I may find the mother ill in bed when I visit a home," she said. "Or perhaps she cannot leave the baby and others of the family. They must have their ~gpeals, of course, and it may not be wise to give the money to buy them. So I go out myself among the stalls in Somers Town and see what I can get. "Well, I can buy 3 lbs. of potatoes for a penny-quite good-a ha'penny worth of carrots. As for meat, it is bought in 'pieces.' I buy them at 3d. or 4d. a pound." ...

DYSPEPTICS NEED NOT DIET A SIMPLE MEANS OF PREVENTING FOOD FERMENTATION. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 5 March 1914

DYSPEPTICS NEED NOT DIET A SIMPLE MEANS OF PREVENT ING .FOOD FERMENTATION. Food fermentation is the cause of all the: discomfort and .pain dyspeptics suffer. It does not necessarily follow, hawever, that in order to obtain re lief they must deny themselves the enjoyment they derive from eating so-called indigestible,, luxuries. The 'most- satisfactory method of-. overcom ing the difficulty waould be to !prevent thu fermentation fromi occutirring at all, and this can be done by a very simple means." It miust first be ex plained t-hat most of the?foods .we eat contain a certain quantity of-acid'orm ing elenientsi, and 'digestible?: foods, of course, contain; a. arge prxportion. When these foods arteaten, .fiO acid collcct., irritates'. the alls- of the -timach, and causes the food to fer ment while it is dig-esting. This fer menting food also ?gives off gas which distends the stomach, cauning that full, uncomfortable feeling: so often noticed after eatine. -The root of the trouble it ...

EDUCATING THE FARMER. STATE MINISTRY'S SCHEME. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 5 March 1914

EDUCATING THE FARMER. STATE MINISTRY'S SCHEME. Speaking at a function at-Horsham on Saturday, Mr. Hagelthorn, Minister of Public Works, in replying to tne toast of the State Parliament, said that it had been indicated that the Ministry was not doing enough for the country. The present Ministry had done a great. more than previous Ministries in the development of the country, as people would recognise if they looked at the Ministry's policy of country railways and the develop ment .of outer ports. It might be true the population of . the cities, especially Melbourne, was increasing out of proportion to the population of the country. For instance, there were fewer people in the Wiinmnera to-day than there were five years ago. That was not a' satisfactory position, but it was a problem states men were facing all. over the world. There were many temedlies proposed, but probably one. of the .sanest .was. to enable the farmers and those on ?.o land to be as well : equipped educa-: tionall...

THE BLOW FLY PEST. SUGGESTED REMEDIAL MEASURES. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 9 March 1914

THE BLOW FLY PEST. -4-- BUUGGBTED REMEDIAL MEASURES. The "Farmer and Settler" says teat while the attention of the pastoralists and farmers of New South Wales is concentrated upon the experiments now being conducted at Yarrawin station by Mhr. J.L. Froggatt, ason of the Govern ment Entomologist, for the purpose of breeding a parasitic wasp to deatroy the pupae of the sheep maggot fly, it must- not be forgotten that the menace of the peat remains undiminished, and the wasp is, as yet, an insignificant destructive factor. -The sheepman hopes frequently that Mr. Froggatt may breed the wasp in such numbers that the blowflies may be totally ex terminated, and he is prepared to do a-hat he can to further the successful accomplishment of this object. Never theless, the fact must be patent that while the experiments are' being per-. rected the fly is pursuing its destruc tive course, the maggots are eating into the flesh of the unfortunate sheep, na of which are 'succumbing. ung the hot and...

INTERSTATE COMMISSION. TARIFF AND COMBINES. CONTRIBUTED. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 9 March 1914

INTERSTATE COMMISSION. TARIFF AND COMBINR8. 3 . CONTP.IBUTED. Mr. A. B. Piddington and his col: s leagues Mwssrs. G. Swinburne and N. i Lockyer, the Interstate Commissioners, are' rendering estimable service in * placing reliable information on matters > of vital importance at the disposal of 1 the electors. When the tariff was ! discussed in Parliament there was a I flood of- loose talk; some members re 3 peated the fairy tales of importer or manufacturer. The modern M.P. must be superficially omniscient; he handles hundreds of quotations, and, necessari ly, masters but two or three of them. In place of that vague talk, men who have devoted their lives to com. mercia. and tariff issues are taking evidence, are asking witnesses ques tions which go right to the heart of the matter, and . are checking the answers by- personal examination of factories apd careful study of figures supplied by statsits-Federal, State and foreign. Already the commissioners have brought to light facts w...

WOOD WOOD AND DISTRICT ASSOCIATION. Nyah v. Yarraby. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 9 March 1914

WOOD WOOD AND DIBTRICT A80CIATION. Nych v. Yasraby. Havingfreahin their memory the recent severe drubbing administrated by Wood Wood it was in somewhat of a chastened spirit that Nyah oricketers journeyed to Taraby on Saturday. There are always possibilities where the Yarraby bowling is concernad, and on this occasion the pssibilities materislised, as the figures, Lsvler f for 5 and Warburton 4 for 12, euiciently indicate. Nyah, batting first, compiled 20 runs, of which the ever re lisble "andries" made 3. Four batsmen, (A. Lewis 2, Mole 7, Foster 2 and 0. Lewis 6) succeeded in evading the sbhorred "duck". When Yarraby took the crease it looked as if a repetition of the Nyah collapse would take place, but E. Matson and the veteran H. Stafford 'topped the procession for a while, and Tarraby won on the first innings by 18 riis. Smith 2, Bennett 4, Warburton 0, Lawler 2, Matson 12, Stafford 8, Jesnin 2, Borchard 1, K.
