The Western Champion. Vita rine literis mors est. BLACKALL, SATURDAY, DEC. 13. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 13 December 1879

§k (pmtjjion. Vita tine Uteri* mart est. BLA.CKALT,, SATURDAY, DEC. 13. WE do not know who Mr. COOTS is, further than thai to is tlio author of a pamphlet on the Railway and Loan policy of Queensland. His argument is that the colony now is in a desperately Woeful stab), and in a far worse financial position than in 186G. He, there fore, deprecates the continuance of lonn expenditure on raiUvuys, which he characterises os the endeavor to outface threatened bankruptcy by increased dis play, and greater profusion of expendi ture. We confess that we do not place much confidence in the utterances of th...

Coming Calamities. (Concluded.) [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 13 December 1879

Coming Calamities. (Concluded.) IN many countries vast districts will be deserted, and eren in this country some portion* will appear so near that condition (u to appal die traveller. One may walk whole days over hundreds ot farms without seeing a living thing. On all the large tracts of land that were once so animated with animal life, not a vestige will be seen. The houses on the deserted stations will show signs of disarrangement and ncgligence that plainly tells of the hurried departure of the owners to the populous cities. Let the tra veller pursue his way till he comes to the small towns, many of which will not contain a single living thing. Let him look into the houses; let him pass through the doors which stand ajar and witness the sickening spectacle of whole families dead. Let him still wander, if he yet have courage, through the fields, on the hillside, and in the dark gullies of the mountains, and he will see every phase of thia terrible malady, till the terminating poin...
