The Chief Cause of Colonial Dissatisfaction. [Newspaper Article] — The Inquirer & Commercial News — 14 November 1855

The Chief Cause of Colonial Dissatisfaction. It is not a little strange that the British Constitution itself a combination of monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy, in which the latter is the 'dominant element, should hitherto have providedno government for its uncbartered colonies but one in which the monarchical element is alone to be found, and that in the worst form of irresponsibility — a delegated power, at the same time ill defined and uncontrolled. In England a Government could not exist for a month except on the strength of popular opinion. In Australia, a Government may endure for live or six years, not only in onaccordance with popular opin ion, but in open defiance of it. Even the recognised tenure by which many high offices are held va. Eng land, ** quamdiu he be»e gesserittt,' is seldom applied to colonies, to the chief magistracy of which men both morally and intellectually unworthy of he office have been, and are still, appointed; the only recognised ground of recall ...

[ADVEUTiSMENT.3 — Holloway's Oint ment and Pills will cure any disease of the Skin ofr the longest standing — William Fredrick Anderson, Owen River, Mel bourne, suffered for a long time from erup tions on the skin, his face, arm-, and legs, were covered with, little pustules and sores of a scorbutic nature, — for the cure of this unsightly and painful disfigurement, he tried, a variety of remedies, which failed to benefit him. At last he tried Holloway's Ointment and Pills, which very soon produced a favourable change, and by a few weeks' perseverance with these remedies, he was completely cured. This famous Ointment will cure ulcers and old wounds of twenty years standing.

Jtat and gemesti^ Jfnfettupua. The lease of the Public Garden being about ex pire, and the property again to revert tothe Govern ment, it is not premature to enquire what steps will be taken to render this ground of any service to the townspeople. Hitherto it has been an eye sore. It has been locked up for a term of years, and the tenant being- naturally anxious only to realize as much as possible during1 his term of oc cupancy has made no effort to render it an orna ment to the town, but has contented himself with rearing successive crops of vegetables. It is ge nerally admitted that, both as regards site and soil, the reserve is unfitted for what it was origi nally intended — a public garden — but yet it might be made a public recreation ground, and, if planted with couch grass, might, perhaps, make a good cricket-ground. The colony, however, ought to possess a botanical garden, and the sooner a plot of ground is set apart, for the purpose, the better. The sister colonies have res...

SOUTH AUSTRALIA. MERCANTILE REPORT. Thursday evening, September 20,1855. [Newspaper Article] — The Inquirer & Commercial News — 14 November 1855

SOUTH AUSTRALIA. MERCANTILE REPORT. Thursday evening, September 20, 1855. The elections have for die most part occupied the place of general business this week, and for the last two days more especially the town has worn the ap pearance of a general holiday. The Burra Burra's. arrival on Tuesday, with news from Melbourne to the 15th and Sydney to the 12th instant, shows a firm tone in the flour markets there, and an advance in price. From this intelligence, coupled with the scarcity of flour here, most holders now want £45 per ton for fine, and whilst the trade is so barely supplied, it is difficult to say if a further advance will not be estab lished beyond this figure. Prime Irish oats hare been sold at 5s 6d per busheL We have no change to report in1 barley or bran. Wheat cannot be quoted with accuracy, the quantity reaching town being in sufficient to establish a quotation upon. A cargo of Mauritius sugar has arrived by the Swallow, which is to be submitted to public auction on ...
