WEDDERBURN [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 28 February 1914

WEDDERBURN [From Our Own Correspondent.] A meeting of the Wedderburn Racing club took place at More croft's hotel on Wednesday night. There was a good attendance of members, who were all very en thusiastic about the prospects of Wednesday, March 25th. The ground committee reported that the improvements sug gested in the way of accommo dation for the secretaries, and clerk of scales, were well forward and would be completed by the time they were required. The entertainment committee re ported that negotiations were in progress regarding the evening proceedings, but they had not yetdecided what would be the most profitable enterprise. The Pre sident, Dr Kinder, and the two secretaries were instructed to confer with Mr W. Ford in re gard to the luncheon on the ground and the catering for the ball. Mr W. Young Man Brutally Shot* Murderer Takes Poison. Mr Sydney Oswald Coutts Murder.d. Great Sensation Caused. A shocking murder took place oh the farm of Mr Sydney Oswald Coutts, about two miles from Boort, on Tuesday evening, when an em ployee named George Appelby deliberately shot Mr Coutts. It would appejr, from information to lijnd, that Appe'by, who was en gaged as cook end la! ourer on the estate known as Old Uoort Station, left li s job that clay, and Mr Coutts e'eclined to pay him a week's v ages which was due in lieu of a week's notice being given. This evidently preyed 011 Appelby's mind, who came into town during the day, where he had a drink or two. Mr Coutts also came into Biort, and th; two once more had an argument about the wages due. ^ About 5 o'clock in the evening Mr Coutts drove home, taking with him another employee named John Christie, better known as " Scolty," who has only been out from the old country about 12 moirlis. On reaching home they drove down the paddoc...
