New Bohemians: New Music for a New Generation by Vail Weller Entertainment Editor Ra«ng - **** This year saw a return to meaningful music, and a lot of women artists took the spotlight. Suzanne Vega's 1987 hit "Luka" was basically the first of a boom which was to include such talents as Natalie Merchant (of 10,000 Maniacs), Sinead O'Connor, Michelle Shocked, Toni Childs, and of course, Tracy Chapman. One of the most interesting to me, however, is Edie Brickell. Brickell is the lead singer and writer of most of the songs and lyrics for the New Bohemians. The band was playing in a Dallas bar three years ago when Brickell joined them onstage. The :hemistry was right This album is :alled "Shooting Rubber Bands at the Stars" and the sleeve's artwork is also Brickell's - primitive, :olorful caricatures of the band, lonsensical felines and other iesigns. Brickell is often compared to Rickie Lee Jones and she herself sees the similarities, but this music is different - the sound is ...

Another #1 for Steel by Nanette Quatchak Entertainment Editor Rating - **rki If you have never read a Danielle Steel book before , you don't know what you're missing. I have read several of Steel's books, and they have all been very different and intense. I expected to find some repetitive plots in her books, along with some similar settings, bm instead I found new ideas in new settings. One of Steel's most recently published books, Kaleidoscope, is one of her books that I could not put down. It begins with Sam Walker, a Harvard University student who had to struggle for _everything he had achieved, finding himself drafted into the Army iuring WWII in Naples, Italy. During the horrid fighting and Jie depressing holidays spent in foxholes, Sam meets Arthur Patterson. Arthur, who is older than Sam yet admires him in every way, quickly becomes Sam's best Mend. Toward the end of the war, 5am falls in love with an extremely beautiful, innocent and scared French girl named Solange...

Thunderous Floyd by Robb Frederick Collegian Staff Writer What's a classic rock group to dc after savoring a rejuvenating comeback album and a subsequent sold-out stadium tour? Why, release a live concert LP, of course. "Delicate Sound of Thunder", the latest work by Pink Floyd, successfully captures the band's 1988 U.S. tour, and it's just in time foi Christmas. "Delicate Sound" is the type of musical release that owners of "CD players dream about. Pink Floyd' s characteristic sound has frequently included odd sound effects that only a CD can justifiably reproduce. These often-psychedelic effects dominated the group's earlier works "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall", and the same effects are brilliantl y reproduced on "Delicate Sound". The two-disk package offers more than 100 minutes of completely digital recording. The compact disc also rewards owners with a bonus track,"Us and Them." The first disc is primarily _z summary of Floyd's 1987 production "A Momentary L...

Rock News by Vail Weller Entertainment Editor Stevie Wonder is serious about running for Detroit mayor, possibly in 1993 or 1997. Billy Idol, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Bob Dylan, Tracy Chapman, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Nils Lofgren, Jerry Garcia, and Bob Weir were all a part of an all acoustic concert organized by Neil Young. The show benefitted the Bridge School (to improve communication for handicapped, nonspeaking children). Two of Young's children are handicapped. The show took place in Oakland, California on December 4th. Columbia Records has so far this year been sent two dozen gold and platinum certificates due to such artists as Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Barbra Streisand, George Michael, and the soundtrack from the film, "Less Than Zero". Pamela Des Barre wrote an eye-opening account of her life as a rock band groupie in "I'm With the Band". Ally Sheedy read the film script and liked it so much that she bought the film right...

Ask Louanne uanne I am a freshman here at Penn State-Behrend. I have encountered prejudice dealing with homosexuality. I feel out of place because homosexuality is looked down upon. I feel I should be able to express my true feelings of sexuality with a consenting significant other as long as there is no infringement on others rights. Therefore I feel homosexuality should be discussed openly to alleviate the friction that exists between homosexuals and heterosexuals. I feel that people automatically assume that if you are homosexual, you are infested with AIDS. Most homosexuals use devises to demote the chance of contracting some disease. Just as heterosexuals use devises to demote the chance of pregnancy. Back in 1960's with the sexual revolution, our parents were more aware and more accepting of people with alternative lifestyles. With the issuance of the 1980's, I feel that sexuality should not be a factor with one's life. Considering this is supposed to be the decade of ...

The End Of Our Man With Vision by Brett Taylor Collegian Staff Writer So this is how the semester ends... Not with a bang but with a whimper. - T.S. Eliot When I started here at Behrend in 1855, things were a great deal simpler. The future was something my fellow students and I embraced, not feared. And back in those days, we had no Man With Vision to guide the way. That's why I feel terrible. I've been neglecting all of my mail from you poor kids still in search of vision. Unfortunately, this is my last column, so I can't possibly get to the 3,000 or so letters piled here on my desk. I'll do my best, though, to get to as many as possible today. I am a sophomore business major, but I realiy want to be a poet like you. What should I do? You came to the * right person. Let me share with you something that really helped me when / was a struggling young business major who wanted to be a poet. HOW TO BE A POET 1. Wear black clothing. You will tell people you are mourning the sa...
