E)[IS(C o m©©2(o)i]D [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 17 November 1983

E)[IS(Co m©©2(o)i]D By Mike Markle TTh(B (SffaDssfiongg Big Country may be a relatively unknown band right now, but judging by the strength of their energetic debut LP The Crossing, they may soon start a new trend in U.S./Scottish rock. It has taken Scotland years to produce a major rock act to contend for a share of the U.S. audience, but Big Country was well worth the wait. The rhythm-heavy "big" twin-guitar sound on The Crossing is enough to blow away many American bands. Big Country consists of guitarists Stuart Adamson (former member of the U.K. punk group The Skids) and Bruce Watson, while the rhythm chores are handled by bassist Tony Butler and skin slammer Mark Brzezicki (both former session men for Pete Townsend). Adamson and Watson combine their talents to produce a bagpipe-guitar sound that has to be heard to be believed, while Butler and Brzezicki provide an up-front rhythm aided by Steve Lilly white's crisp, clean production. Everything i...

Capitol harriers end winning season By Jeanne A. Ballets The 1983 Cross Country team finished its second varsity season with 12 wins and one loss, and succeeded in recapturing the Keystone Athletic Conference title. Bud Smitley Cross Country Coach This year's harriers included seven seniors: team captain Dave Wicks, Jerry Trently, Dave McNamara, Mike Markle, Brian Gauger, Al Fiertag, Jeff Carroll; and four juniors: Greg Nisley, Dan Miller, Joel Hager and Brian Bachman. Sporting events lack Penn State pride [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 17 November 1983

Sporting events lack Penn State pride Rob's Reaction A Sports Editorial by Rob Rejmaniak The 1983 sports season was continued proof of the amount of student apathy which exists here at Capitol Campus. Here, when it comes to supporting sports teams, the expression, "Be Penn State proud," is worth about as much as is an ice cube in the arctic. Last winter, I took the position of Statistics Information Director with the Athletic Department. During my tenure, 90 percent of my job was spent trying to obtain more recognition for the sports teams on campus. I wrote press releases, called radio and television stations, and printed pamphlets in the hopes that the teams at Capitol would become better known by the students and the area. I even went so far as to print the remaining basketball home games in the Jan. 24, 1983 issue of Capitol Times, hoping to bring more students out to watch the games. However, with the basketball season coming to a close and student apathy still thri...

Capitol soccer team wraps up first season [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 17 November 1983

Capitol soccer team wraps up first season Now that Capitol's first ever varsity soccer season has come to a close, much can be said of the team's accomplishments. It was a season of firsts. It was the first time Capitol had a soccer team compete in District 19. Halfback Tom Canard scored the first goal in the history of the campus. When Capitol tied with Berks campus 1 to 1, it was the first tie ever recorded by a Capitol soccer team. Against Lancaster Bible, Capitol recorded its first soccer win in campus history, winning 4 to 0. The game was also the first time that a Capitol goalie, Jack Boyczuk, ever shut out an opposing team. Although the team's final record stands at one win, nine losses and one tie, Head Coach Bill Miles claims he is not embarassed by the record and was pleased with the accomplishments of his team. "We were in eight of the games we lost," said Miles. "Spring Garden was the only team that beat us badly." Spring Garden, a scholarship school, beat Capito...

Instructor evaluation form: how does it rate? [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 16 December 1983

Instructor evaluation form: how does it rate? By Neil Myers Those instructor evaluation forms—as much as you might hate them, they play a major role in granting or denying tenure and promotions. Here at Capitol Campus, the form is something that nobody loves and many people misunderstand. According to Dr. John Joseph, assistant provost, promotions and tenure are granted on the basis of teaching ability, research, scholarship and community service, but, "By far the single most used method of evaluation is the student evaluation." Even so,that - doesn't mean the evaluations are popular. "They're often very inaccurate, "says Dr. Irwin Richman, professor of American Studies and History. One of the questions on the form asks if the instructor encouraged discusssion. "I don't necessarily want to stimulate discussion," Richman says, adding some courses should be taught by lecture and others by participation. Richman thinks some students answer negatively based on subjective att...
