OUR FARM _ A _ T [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 October 1884
OUR FARM _ A _ T WAYNE , DU PAGE CO ., ILL . By P . H . JACOBS . Ifntftta Department we report the results of the op . eratlom of all machinery , implements or other articles sent to our farm , be they > favorable or not . and our readers may expect a truthful report of tfie same . Aimthing intended for this department should he addressed to the Farm . Field and Fireside Experimental Farm , Wayne , Du Page Co ., III ., and forwarded via N . IF Ry .-ED . \ The season has passed for experimental operations except the sowing of wheat . This crop is one that cannot be experimented with except under certain conditions . The climate of each section in which it is grown influences it , and the soil may be specially adapted to some varieties , while other kinds will not yield at all . Then we must be confronted with dry and damp soil , Insects , and the severity of the winter . We have determined , however , to . experiment with wheat on the experimental farm , the objeot being t...
ILLINOIS STATE PAIE [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 October 1884
ILLINOIS STATE PAIE The exhibition was held at the Chicago Driving Bark , beginning Monday , September 8 th . and ended Saturday . September 13 th . The attendance was not as great as that of last season , but the interest manifested was shared by all . We think the managers made a mistake in allowing aide show exhibits Inside the grounds , they being considered nuisances from the fact that the visitors are annoyed by theincessantappeals of the doorkeepers and the discordant sounds of the music which is always a part of such entertainments . Where the fair grounds are so far from certain parts of the city it is important thai the visitors be enabled to obtain refreshments at a low price , and is a matter that shonld come under the observation of the managers . There were places where first-class meals could be obtaiaed , but to those of limited means , who brought their families , the expenses were rather high . The side stands afforded opportunities to aiany , but the miserable lem...
The Hew York State Fair . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 October 1884
The Hew York State Fair . The annual fair of the New York State Agricultural Society , held at Elmira , wa _ one of the most successful ever held . The society is certainly deserving of much praise for demonstrating to the public the possibility of holding a . State Fair without horse racing and- low , disreputable shows , and the running of gamesby which so many of the unwary are trapped . STOCK . In live stock the great interest seems to becentered in beef and dairy animals . There were 768 entries , of which 19 were Herefords , 158 Holstins , 184 Jerseys , 118 Ayrshires , 93 Shorthorns and 80 Devons . The herd prizes wereawarded as follows : Jersey . to A . Baker , of West • Dry den ; Helsteins to Smiths & Powell , Syracuse ; Shorthorns to D . B . Haight , Dover Plains ; Gurnseys to L . A . Ledyard , Cazenovia . The Holstein exhibit of Smiths & Powell was very fine , and deserving of special mention . They had eleven milch cows . eleven bulls , and twenty-...
Tri-State Fair at Toledo , 0 . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 October 1884
Tri-State Fair at Toledo, O. The Tri-State Fair , held at Toledo , Ohio , was in many respects a success , yet we cannot help censuring this association for allowing so many disreputable side shows and catch-penny affairs of all kinds , admittance to their ground . If the officers of this association would pay a visit to the New York State Fair they would learn that it is not impossible to hold their fall meeting without these disgusting and disreputable games and shows . We heartily endorse the Farm Journal in saying that if the fair is a fair , attend and help build it up . If it is a gambling concern in any form stay away and help break it down . The display of Agricultural Machinery was good but the space allotted to the exhibitors was rather crowded , making it difficult of access . The show of stock was fair and attracted a great many people . The poultry house is rather small , but some good chicks were shown . The Langshans shown by W . O . Dakin proved the most attractive ....
