% i $$ m [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 June 1906

% i $$ m The season of little chicks is here . Dont forget the importance of cleanliness , pure water , pure air , good food and plenty of it in variety . A Minnesota farmer has figured it out that lie makes more out of ten hens than out of one cow , with less capital invested and with less labor involved . This doesnt prove that there is more money in hens than in cows , but it does prove , doubtless , there is more money in . liens for this particular farmer . And there should be no farm on which hens are not a source of profit . A comparatively new feature of the pure-bred poultry business is the selling of newly hatched chicks . Many claim that this is more satisfactory than selling eggs for hatching . The chicks are shipped by express when twenty-four hours old . As chicks can go without food very nicely . for seventy-two hours after hatching they can be shipped long distances . It is not difficult to ship them so they will be comfortable . There is nothing like good quality to...

Miilte , [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 June 1906

Miilte , Dont take anybody s word for it that the separator need be cleaned but once a day . It is always better to clean it thoroughly after every time it is used . This custom of cleaning but once a day is the cause of many a poor batch of butter . There is such a thing as skimming milk both too thin and too thick . That is , there are extremes in the content of butter fat , beyond which wo should not go . The most satisfactory fat content for cream will probably be found in that testing between 2 ii and ? . i per cent . It will give better satisfaction both for butter and for milk . A large share of profit in the dairy business is found in the proper utilization of the by-product of skim milk . And the best way to feed this skim milk is to have it in good condition . It is a question which animals on the farm will make the most profitable use of the skim milk . The young hogs will make wonderful growth on it in conjunction with clover pasture . Fed as curd or cheese , made by boi...

What does he plant who plants a tree ? He plants ,, in sap and leaves and wood In love of home and loyalty , And far-cast thought of civil good—His blessing on the neighborhood , Who in the hollow of his hand Holds all the growth of all our land— A nation s growth from sea to sea Stirs in his heart who plants a tree . —Richard...

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY A Cream Separator BECAUSE—It will save you at least $ 10 .- to $ 15 .- per cow every year of use over any gravity setting or skimming process , and last you at least twenty years . BECAUSE—It will save you at least $ 5 .- per cow every year of use over any imitating cream separator , and last you from five to ten times as long . TILIE'S T'RAMT . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 July 1906

TILIES TRAMT . Tillie crept tremblingly into the farthest corner of the bare room and huddled down on the floor , a most forlorn little figure . When Charlie left her with a cheery farewell , and set off at a rapid pace for the minister and Mabel and Ned , Tillie had made up her mind to await their return with all the bravery in the world , and not to be frightened the least bit . As he strode rapidly away her heart sank with every step and her fears arose . The darkness and silence of the deserted house oppressed her . Strange creaks came to her ears ; [ weird shapes flitted in the dark . Her heart beat fast and her eyes stared wildly at the blackness . Her thoughts were full of the stormy scene of yesterday between her father and Charlie ; how she had wept and implored and besought in vain to turn her parent from liis obdurate way of thinking ; of her meeting with Charlie that evening , and of the hastil y planned and executed elopement . Surel y her father would not think of look...

HATTY HILL FAItM . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 July 1906

HATTY HILL FAItM . ¦ BY MRS . C . C . WOUTB-RS . CHAPTER VII . FUN AND FRUIT . June passed quietl y by . John was the town assessor , and took this month for that work . Mary went witli him one day , and had a most delightful ride . She made several new acquaintances , and had little chats with some old friends . They were both so pleased with the day that they decided to go fishing after potato planting . This they did , after persuading their neighbors , the Grants , to go , too . The boys fished and the girls rowed , and then the girls fished while the boys rowed . They made coffee , with two stones for a stove , and the fire between them . Then Mary fried some of the fish which the boys had cleaned . They sat on the soft green grass to eat , and enjoyed to the Full that beautiful June day . Do you folks realize , asked Will Grant , as he tossed the backbone of a pickerel to Ponto , his big Newfoundland dog , that in less than two weeks the Fourth of our Fathers will be here ? So...
