THOUGHT . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 November 1875

THOUGHT . KY C . W . The generation of to-day speaks with pride of its superior civilization . It listens with attentive and delighted car to the steady march of forces that arc daily leveling the bulwarks of ignorance and superstition , that are subduing wildernesses and planting them with busy cities and blossoming gardens : that are lifting men from their narrow channels of life , and throwing them into the broad , rapid current of human progress . Elated by a generous activity , it looks back with little less than horror upon the cripp led life of Medieval times . It thanks , and with abundant reason , the revolutions of time and thought that have forever freed it from the worse than dungeon life of old . It rejoices in the birth of better things . In the words of one of the noblest of its sons it says , Better fifty years of Europe than a cycle of Cathay . Is it possible for us to discern the cause that has so broadly distin- J . D . COLLEGE NEWS AND EXCHANGES . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 November 1875

COLLEGE NEWS AND EXCHANGES . Our exchanges are not as numerous as we would desire , and therefore leaves to us little discrimination between the mass of college organs . The Tripod , in referring to the critical temper displayed in many sheets , would consider the greater number of criticisms passed as very often of a partial and pedantic character . Admitting this to be as the author asserts , we cannot forbear admiring and fostering the impartiality existent in some of our contemporaries . The young advocates of this growing department of literature should endeavor to inculcate a spirit of fairness . We ought not to be rivals hooting every weak position taken ; we ought to act as fellows , and should yield to a just criticism , though it may often hurt our personal pride . The Westminster Monthly is welcome , coming , as it does , full of life and spirit . The College yourual again graces our file , a gem of interest , its Clippings particularly spicy and humorous . One quality co...

CHARACTER- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 December 1875

CHARACTER- BY R . L . What we are and what we have been is expressed m the word character . All of man is included in it , no part is left out . The settled convictions that have been springs to action are the parts of this body of the soul . They are , as in the coral growth , like the basement coral that gives shape and direction and significance to the superstrucure of deeds , which outwardly act the character and inwardly react upon it . No one command embodies so much as that be a man of character , and no other contains so good a maxim by which to shape one s life . It is the Golden Rule and more ; it means that one shall ever , in thought , word and deed , side with the right and the good . Mankind is subject to error and , with but finite natures , we may not attain to perfection . But it is possible to approximate to that one type of ideal character found in the Son pf man . Regarded as a Jewish philosopher , he himself , with his life is that philosophy . The Christain rel...

FRESH GUESSES AT TRUTH . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 December 1875

FRESH GUESSES AT TRUTH . The old time folly of the human reason has been to draw its conclusions from only a small part of the facts or premises concerned . Man s eyes are both on the front side of his head and so placed that they command only a small section of the entire landscape . All that lies on the side opposite the direction of the eyes is out of sight . So the understanding often considers the objects Which have met its accustomed vision and takes no accouut of the possible fields and facts lying in the opposite direction . And beside the unseen things behind us , there is an optical delusion always lurking in the scenes before us . The most distant objects are in appearance both smaller and less distinct than the nearer ones . Only he who is aware of the perspective distances can correct the illusion . So the common understanding constantly fails to give due weight and attention to the facts and arguments whose field is in the distance . The Here and Now carry the decision...

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 December 1875

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT . It is an old and very common saying , that man is a social oeing . Endowed as he is with speech , with a thinking , planning mind , with social desires , how could he be otherwise and develop his powers . Without society the discoveries of one could never be of any possible benefit to another , the thoughts of a masterly intellect could never become the possessions of humanity ; each generation would start just where their ancestors started and leave off , just where they left off . No inventions of any kind could originate , for each person s wants would be circumscribed to an extremely narrow sphere ; none would ever care lor the welfare of others , none could ever reap any reward from enter prise , none would be induced to strive for any higher happiness than mere animal pleasure . Moreover it would be impossible to construct public edifices or works of any kind , without united , systematic labor . As a proof of these facts , we find that people who dwell in...

SOCIABILITY AMONG FARMERS- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 December 1875

SOCIABILITY AMONG FARMERS- BY w . s . c . It is an objection frequently urged by foreigners against the American social system that there is too little of real life in it—or in other words , life among , us is too often a round of eating , sleeping and working ,. that our existence most nearly resembles that of our beasts ofburdtn . To some extent the charge can be sustained , for here every energy is bent to the acquisition of property , of wealth ; every hope directed to the one bright Idol—now hidden by its paper clothing—the dollar . In this mad pursuit for wealth the higher wants of man are left uncared for to a certain extent , and in some communities , entirely lacking . Especially is this true of a large portion of our farmers , who , in their greed for land , have closed themselves out of society almost as completely as if upon a desert isle . Having sacrificed everything to the attainment of this end , they necessarily have lost much of the culture and society that might o...
