As Seen in Kansas [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910

As Seen in Kansas The Berkshire World : — Between the Corsa and Kinloch sales I had a few very pleasant days visiting two breeders in . Kansas . I went from Mr . Corsa s to Topeka , Kansas ; in company with Mr . Geo . W . Berry , the breeder of Masterpiece , as well as a lot of other good hogs . Mr . Berry while not a large breeder always has a few fine Berkshire sows and I was much pleased with his herd of Silver Tips sows and was glad to see his young boar Second Masterpiece . He is sired by Ideal Masterpiece and I believe will make a great hog . I spent a very enjoyable day with him looking over the hogs and talking about the time we showed together at the old fair at Kansas City , over 20 years ago . Mr . Berry Is interesting his two sons In the hog business and I believe would be one of the greatest breeders if he would devote his entire time to the hog business . It was a great pleasure to me to meet bis family . From there we drove to Mr . David D . Page s farm where I bought...

Raise Barrows for Market [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910

Raise Barrows for Market Clarksville , Tex . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —I wish to tell you something about my Berkshire herd . My herd boar , Duck Creek Duke 98360 is a medium sized boar of much quality and as a sire , will say that he is the best I have ever used in my herd . To give you an idea as to how hignly I value this boar , will say that every hog in my herd , except two , are his sons or daughters or grandsons or granddaughters . I have seen the offspring of a number of the best boars that I know of in this State , but he will never be offered for sale . His sire Young Royal Duke 77368 was a St . Louis World s Fair winner , and his dam Duke s Model was a very fine sow of Governor Lee blood . Surely Duck Creek Duke is a good individual and as a sire—well , I think he is good . I will tell you where Berkshire breeders let a golden opportunity to promote Berkshire interests slip by . That is in raising fat barrows for the markets . I think that if ...

The Judge ' s Side . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910

The Judge s Side . Bennington , Mich . To The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —In your February issue I notice an article entitled Who Is Right . With all respect to the writer of that article , and to the judge that made the award at the last International , it seems to me that there are many things that should be taken into consideration . First : This carload of barrows was judged by a judge taat had only one object in view and that was to get the animals which would dress out f with the least amount of shrinkage ito the buyer , and which would cut up to the best advantage without any regard to the cost of production to the producer or of any thought of what that class of hogs , if used as breeding foundations , would produce . With the fact that there were no other type of Berkshires in competition and the further fact that a car load of most any type of Berkshires would be easy winners in that class , it seems to me that this one award does not provs that that...

Opinion of Another Breeder [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910

Opinion of Another Breeder Fox , Kendall Co ., III . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Dears Sirs : —In regard to your editorial in the February issue I feel that you have called up a question of vital importance to Berkshire breeders . 1 feel that the tendency has been toward fineness , finish and quality in the breeding operations of late . Now the question is shall this continue ? The average weight of hogs shipped to Chicago is slightly over 200 pounds and as a general rule the hog topping the market weighs around 300 pounds . It is generally conceded that as we gain size we sacrifice finish and quality and therefore we must surely strive to obtain this quality as we improve the weight for age . It is but natural for the judge to choose the animal that is most pleasing to tne eye other things , outside of size , being equal . Now as we increase the size we surely must increase to a certain extent the age of maturing . The hog that the farmer demands is the one that will ...

All of these sows will farrow early Spring litters and I certainly will have some good stock to offer Berkshire breeders . Premier Belle Duke • 3 rd 105323 is a splendid breeder and mated with the good sows I have mentioned , he ought to prove a high class sire .
