Ie flitianta Iemocrat. TIE TORY MASSACRE. A little more than a year ago last winter, we made a tour through the Southern States, and in the course of our rambles, tarried a while at the little village of Hillsborough, in North Carolina. It was a location hallowed to oar mind by marny revolutionary associations. In his memorable retreat across North Caroli na, in February, 1781, the ragged but gallant army of Gen. Greene, forded the river Iaw, a short distance from Hillsborough. All through the revolutionary struggles, the neighboring county was noted for its affrays, which were constantly occurring, either between the patri ota and the English troops, or the patriots and their traltprous enemies, the tories. Not far from Hillsborough, we wer, shown the scene of a terrible massacre of tories by the troopers of " Lee's Legion." Great chan. ges have taken place since those eventful times, and our guide could only point out the vicinity of the conflict, there being no old ve teran to de...

Corruption in political bodies must always argue a general corruition in society ; and, where this political corrup. tion has grown, as in Congress, so reckless of shame and exposure, it argues society every 'where to be in a condition of utter overthrow and disintegration." TIE BATTLE OF TIHE SE('TIONS. The line of separation of the North nnd tlhe South is nlow as distinctil drawn and as clearly perceptible, both nt mhnle and abrond, as the rock of Adnunant in the bounmdlss. orcien seen hy Mirzn. The union of the IIepublic is only i union in name. On each side of the line, conflicting opinions, parties and interests have arisen, and the rolstalit spoliation anid oppls. sion of one has driven the other inton i position of hostility, both to the spolintor and oppres sor, and to the furtlher coimtinuance of the con federacy unless as it slipped from the stocks of the lRevolution. Tihe great holy of the Northern people are undisgniscdly hostile to the South Itid its in stitutions. The eagerness with which they ral lied around Fremont, the daily diatribes of its press, the atrocious inmlligtdty which their panm phleteers, bookrights anll itincrant lecturer.s and stump-orators assail Slavery, atn the di terminedl opposition of the Northern Sen('Itit'r and Rl...

e *dlitciina EItlntrat. WHAT A NEWSPAPER DOES FOR NOTHINO. The following article should be read and potn dered well by every man who takes a news paper without paying for it : The result of my observation enables me to state, as a fact, that the publishers of news papers nre more poorly rewarded than any class of men in the United States, who invest aM equal amount of labor, capital, and thought. They are expected to do more service for less pay, to stand more sponglng and "dead head. ig," to puff and defend more people without fee or hope of reward, than any other class. They credit wider and longer ; get oftener cheated; suffer snore pecuniary loss; are of tener the victims of misplaced confidence, thoull any other calling in the community. People pay a printer's hill more reluctantly than any other. It goes harder with them to expend a dollar on a valuable newspaper titan ten on a needless gewgaw ; yet everybody avails hits. self of the use of the editor's pen and the printer's i...
