THURSDAY, JANUARY 4 1866. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. The Common Council. The Com mon Council met yesterday evening, at 7£ o'clock, pursuant to adjournment. There was au unusually large ntletid ance, fifteen members being present. Tlie proposition from Messrs. Hauiitlers and Daniels, recommending that the city hereafter clean her own streets, in stead of trusting to contractors, being the first I'lii'Mtinu in order, after much discussion as to which plan submitted was tho best to adopt, on motion of Mr. Newton the plan submitted by Mr. Saunders met with the acceptance or the Council, and it was unanimously adopted, and referred to the committee on streets, to report such nn organize tion as will render it as efleelive as pos sible. SATURDAY, JANUABY 6. 186?. IOOAI INTELLIQEHCE." Death oy Dr. J. J. Simpkinb. We learned by tbe arrival of the steamer Bolus, from the Eusteru Shore yesterday afternoon, that Dr. Jesse J. Simpkins died ou Thursday night at 7 o'clock, at the residence of his daughter, in North ampton county, in the 61st year of his age. Dr. Simpkins had been subject for several years past to severe attacks of itiflamatlo n of the kidneys, and in these attacks he suffered the most excrutiat- Ing tortures. Age and the troubles of the war had told upon his constitution so, that when peace was proclaimed be was found a confirmed invalid. He therefore returned to tbe shades of Northampton to end his days among his children and family associa tions. Few men in this community atood higher in reputation than Doctor Simpkins. When Mr. Buchanan was elected President, Doctor Simpkins was appointed Collector of Customs for this part—succeeding Samuel T. Sawyer in 1867. When the war broke out in 1861, h found Doct...
