An Essential Preliminary. Tb.3 Democratic party in the United States to-day is simply bur dened with the elements of victo ry. It ia not voters tbat it needs but purpose. To the surprise and disgust of those who remembered the old Democracy, our party is to day timid nnd hesitating. It is a dangerous thing to let the idea get •broad that a party lacks manli ness. There ia a large element of tragico-comedy in the politics of the United States. Bombastes Furioso was the original of most of our Republican machine poli ticians. The Oregan Election. We can't, as a Democrat, deny ourselves the full draught of pleas ure given us by the Oregon elec tion returns. Our Republican friends have undertaken to account for tbe Republican defeat In that State by tbe unpopularity of Hip pie- Mitchell, the Republican biga mist United States Senator from Oregon. This won't do. Such men as Hippie-Mitchell and ex-Attor ney-General Williams are the very men to rally the Republican party. The fact that these persons were found out, in average Republican eatimatiou, is counterbalanced by tbe aroma of tbeir successful chl ; oane. go* (From the Evening Express.) Approximate Returns for the County. Notwithstanding the most stren ous exertions put forth on our part to collect full returns for this coun ty we have thus for secured reli able figures from only 23 out of 35 precincts. We are still without re turns from Azusa, Cahuenga, Du arte, El Monte, Fountain Valley, Oardeu Grove, Old Mission, Or ange, Pomona, San J nan Caplstrano, San Antonio and Elizabeth Lake. The failure on the part of these pre cincts is due either to the indiffer ence of offcers of election to whom our inquiries were addressed, or to the slowness ol mail facilities. However, the aggregate vote of these twelve precincts must be very light in comparison with tbe rest of the county, and we therefore venture to give figures as far as we have been able to collect them, confining ourselves to representa tive names on tbe ticket. The vote for Hager, Non-Partisan, First District, may be taken as a fair average of the other seven can didates at la...
