Captain Spencer's son and the engineer, Ferdinand Lewers, were left at Laysan to look out for things. From the white men concerned in the trouble but little could be learned. They did not care to talk much about the matter. They stated generally that the Japs had gone out on a strike and refused to work; that they got to threatening the whites and as they were so superior in numbers thought that they would have an easy time in doing as they pleased. One of the Japs who was taken from here to work on the island when the Ceylon list left here is said to have fomented discontent and tried to get the other laborers to exterminate the white men.
