TACT AND APPRECIATION. [Newspaper Article] — The Sacred Heart Review — 26 January 1889

TACT AND APPRECIATION. Tact is a necessary element in married life. It may seem very cunning to a lover if you snatch a book or newspaper out of his hand, and ask him to talk to you. But it will only serve to annoy or anger a husband. Do not intrude yourself upon a husband and ask to be petted when he wants to read his paper, or when he is worrying over his account book, or when he is talking business with some friend. Do not complain to your husband that he is cold and changed if he is not in a state of fervent love-making every hour of the twenty-four. Remember that love is like the sun —it has its dawn, its afternoon, its cool evening hours, as well as its high noon. Do not demand high noon the whole twenty-four hours. Be patient and cheerful through its seemingly cool evening and even chilly night hours, and believe the glorious sun of true love is shining still, though veiled from you, and wait till the noon hour comes again, as it surely will. Respond to the first look or tone...

THRILLINC VERSES. [Newspaper Article] — The Sacred Heart Review — 26 January 1889

THRILLINC VERSES. The circumstances which induced the writing of the following well-known and thrilling lines are as follows : A young lady in New York was in the habit of writing for a Philadelphia paper on the subject of temperance. Her writing was so full of pathos and evinced such deep emotion of soul, that a friend accused her of being a maniac on the subject of temperance—whereupon she wrote the following lines : Go feel what I have felt, Go bear what I have borne— Sink 'neath the blows a father dealt; And the cold world's proud scorn; Then suffer on from year to year— The sole relief, the scorching tear. Go kneel where I have knelt, Implore, beseech and pray— Strive the besotted heart to melt, The downward course to stay; Be dashed with bitter curse aside, Your prayers burlesqued, your tears defied. Go weep as I have wept, 1 O'er a loved father's fall— See every promised blessing swept — Youth's sweetness turned to gall; Life's fading flowers strewed all the way— That brought...

WOMEN AND RUM. [Newspaper Article] — The Sacred Heart Review — 26 January 1889

WOMEN AND RUM. Take a home where the mother drinks—l am sorry that I am not compelled in this case to fall back on my imagination. Unfortunately, I have onlytorecall facts where women, young and old, "drink. Drink reaches its depth of debasement when women are its victims. I can have no patience with the woman who drinks. She is a disgrace and degradation. And yet the drinking habit is, too prevalent among women. While their husbands are out of work they diligently ply the " growler." Sometimes they are not ashamed to go to the tavern themselves for the kettle of beer. They are sick or nursing and their only help and support is beer. Their children are brought up on this instead of on the milk which God alone intended. To use the words of a vigorous writer the children begin with the bottle and keep it up. Women send their children to the bar-room for drink. Instead of trying to bring up those children perfect strangers to the tavern, wicked, heartless mothers in their insatiable an...
