No description of property in the South has suffered more by the ravages of war than the Southern railroads, and justly so, having been one of the main instruments by which the rebels were so long enabled to pu lat do. fiance the national arms. With the restoration of peace, necessity will require a speedy building up of the various lines as there was formerly haste in destroying them. The grand total of railway lines in the United States January 1, 1804, was estimated at 49,632,33 miles, of which 33,800,38, costing, including equipment, $1,625,952,215, were completed This was an increase of 1,389,42 miles, costing $41,730,544 over the previous year. Of the aggregates there -were 8,933,45 miles in the Southern States, costing $240,826,470. Every delegate seemed so duly appreciate the importance of the trust confided in him by the loyal people of the county, and the only question seemed lb be — Who are the best men to select?
