M\\t fails Appeal. A NAT<O>' BECOMING MAD. —May not A *§ whole community, a .State, or even a nasi tion, become insane? Bishop Butler once said, "1 was conIs sideling whether, as individuals go mad. ■ whole nations may not also go mad: ■ and adds: "It may be seen that men may § act en manse as much in contradiction to common sense, to common interest and experience, as if they were mistaking crowns of straw for crowns of jewels ; and that millions of men may easily be duped, cheated, and plundered as ilie simplest dreamer of waking dreams, who take .counters for guinea?, and canvass for cloth of gold." WORKIKGMEN. —The noblest men 1 know i'M earth, are men whose hands are brown •with toil; who backed by no ancestral ■graves, hew down the woods and till the jXsoil, and win thereby a prouder fame than king or warrior's name. The ■ workiugmen, whate'er flieir task, to carve ii the stone or bear the hod —they wear . •'upon their honest brows the royal stamp Zand se...

Ihe fjaito Appeal. MARYSVILLE, SATURDAY MORNING, FEB. 11. THAKKS. —WeIIs, Fargo & Co., and their attaches, Randal & Co., Wagnerand Amy. and everybody else, who '.has conferred favors upon us, during the past week, will allow us to tender them our most grateful thanks, and also permit us to remark that they will keep on doing so. ANDIRSON'S LAST NionT.-The theatre was filled again last night. The performance was even an improvement upon the very satisfactory one of the night before. It is a matter of no little surprise, that in a place of such a comparatively limited number of play goers, as in Marysville, there should be two consecutive houses of such great numbers as have greeted the Professor. His very pleasing exhibitions, this afternoon and evening, will undoubtedly be numerously atetnded. We believe his next place of performance is Nevada. THE MARYSVILLE RIFLES.—A member of the afore-named company informed us yesterday, that some two thousand dollars, ac...

l«et Ci Pave the Way. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 11 February 1860

l«et Ci Pave the Way. We flatter ourselves that one good idea has popped into our head. We have often witnessed, and several times noticed, editorially, the improvements going on upon our streets —their tilling in with gravel, 4c. The frequent necessity for such repairs set us to thinking how our streets could be made firm and solid, and free from their present liability to become muddy and full of ruts. The plan for so doing which has occurred to us. is. briefly, as follows : A committee, authorized by the city, or n private individual, or a company, having the requisite small amount of means, could, in the fall of the year, after the working out of the river claims, purchase large amounts of flume lumber on the ground where it had been used, at a very cheap rate, and, constructing rafts or scows of that material, could laden them with cobbles and bring them to our landing. and put them into the hands of our street builders, at a vastly cheaper rate than the paving stones which are...

Reform Needed. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 11 February 1860

Reform Needed. One, whose occupation compels a notice and knowledge of nightly transactions in this city, has pained us with mention of the fact that a large number of prepossessing and really talented and meritorious young men, engaged in business, and having fiduciary employment here, are in the habit of keeping very unseasonable hour? and indulging in habits, which, sooner or later, must end in the impairment of their health and the loss of confidence on the part of their patrons and employers. It is a very sad matter that this state of things should exist; and if our urgent appeal to the better senses of those erring young men will have any good effect, let us offer them our most hearty admonitions to give over their injurious practices, while yet there is opportunity for their return to a better and more profitable course of conduct. Let them be reminded that "the human constitution" is one which cannot be amended by legislative action, or by a two-third vote of the popular sov...

U. T., Feb. 3, 18t50. j DEAR : I would have written you long ago. but was uncertain where 1 would be in the Territory to await your j reply.
