HIGHWAY HOBBERY. [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 14 August 1847

HIGHWAY ROBBERY. On the night of the 24th July, about 11 P. M. as Mr. Wambaugh was on his way from San Francisco to join the camp of Commordore Stocklon in Beat Valley, he was waylaid by three foreigners, within two miles of the house of Nicholas Altgire, and about eight milrs from Hardy's crossing. The highwaymen seized the bridle of his mule as he passing theough a narrow road, thickly lined with brush, and while heald the bridle of his mule, another fired four shots in such rapid succession, as led him to believe they from a five barrelled pistol, The fifth shot took effect upon his head on the right side, and knocked him from his horse. Alter treating him in the most cruel manner they dragged him out of the road, and left him for dead. Mr. Wambaugh recovered his senses about two hours after the robbers left him and made his way to the house of Mr. Nicholas Altgire. where he was kindly treated, and finally reached the camp on the evening of the 26th, very much fatigued and injure...

[ For the California Star. ] Mr. Robert Livermore, Sir :-- Allow me through the medium of the columns which have been kindly opened to me, to express my sincere thanks for your kind care and attention ro me during my brief stay beneath your roof, having been dnven my post by the hostile Indians od the San Joaquin valley. When I arrived at your rancho, Sir, to say the least, I was truely in a distressed state ; it was perceived, and no sooner perceived than relieved, and every thing done to contribute to my comfort. It gives me no little pleasure, (and I hope the method not offensive to yourself.) to make known to the world your true character -- liberal, generous and kind, I may say to a fault, iI am, sir, your obedient servant, B.K. THOMPSON. August 5, 1847 (Line Break) I3''' The rapidity with which the Mechanical processes are carried on, at the present day, is astonishing. Some time ago, if half the stories now afloat, were told, the teller would have been considered a fill desce...
