APPLE HAS A LONG DESCENT. &gt; * . Traced Back to the Cave Dwellers of twin Lakes. Among the fruits of the rose family are apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries and quinces, as well as strawberries and blackberries. The apple is a fruit of long descent. Among the ruins of the Swiss lake dwellers are found remains of small seed Apples which show the seed valves and the grains of flesh. The crab apple is a native of Britain and was the stock on which were grafted the choicest varieties when brought from Europe, chiefly France. Apples of some sort were abundant before the conquest and had been introduced probably by the Romans. Yet often as Saxon manuscripts speak of apples and elder there is no mention of-named varieties before the thirteenth century. RELIEF FOR CASTAWAYS. few Kealaad Establishes Supply Depute on Uninhabited Inlaade. The French bark An Jon was wrecked on onebf the Auckland Islands, 200 miles south of New Zealand, eight months ago. The crew lived for a week solely on the fish they caught, Snd the outlook was dark. Then one day two of the men found near the shore a depot of supplies, containing a variety of food and sufficient clothing to last the company for at least a year. Great was the Joy of the castaway crew, for they were in sore straits when they discovered the benevolent provision that had been made for shipwrecked sailors. A few weeks later the castaways bailed a passing vessel, and in a few moifths they were home In France again. The New Zealand government had established this supply depot. It proved so serviceable to this party of unfortunates that the government has since placed similar depots on ail the Island groups south and southeast of New Zealand, and also on the Kermadecs, to the northeast-east....
