Hispanic group elects officers Ottng challenges of the next decade, the Forum of National Hispanic Organizations has elected Rodolfo B. Sanchez, an active and nationally prominent Hispanic, as its new chairman for 1880, Pablo Sedillo, past chairman, announced this week. “Our record of working for Hispanic citizens throughout the country will be carried on and enhanced by Mr. Sanchez’s dynamic and determined guidance as we start the challenges of the 80s," Sedillo said. “Our citizens’ needs for widespread improvements in such fields as education, health services, criminal justice, immigration and commerce call for greater unity among Hispanic organizations and leaders, as well as more public awareness and action to reach these goals,” Sedillo added. “The decade of the 80s will see Hispanic people become the largest minority in the United States,” Sanchez said, “and the chronic issues plaguing Hispanics must be overcome and irradicated forever.

Garfield wins ‘Anything Goes’ By Gregg Heacock Garfield High School this Saturday, Jan. 26, became the first three-time winner of the East Side “Almost Anything Goes” Competition held at Wilson High. Even though other schools knew Garfield was the team to beat and even though the competition is gruelling, spirits of all the teams soared together in this popular tun-fest of mud and mayhem. As GHS Coach John Benson put it, “When the other teams came over to Join us in toebending exercises during our warmup, we knew it was going to be a grand day all ’round.” Actually, rumors spread of other teams planning devious attempts to take the trophy from the Bulldogs. The day was not easily won. Garfield took first place in the Ice Blocks Competition, plus Musical Tires in the Mud, and the ' Obstacle Course Race. Soccer finishes in second The East Los Angeles Diablos Youth Soccer Club finished its season in second place with a 7-1-1 record. Beaten only by the tough Cougars of West Covina 1-0, the Diablos played well while representing the Abraham Lincoln Soccer league. Coached by Keith Hatcher, the Diablos will begin the spring season in April. Their overall record is 10-1-1. In the upcoming weeks they will play local tarns, including the Garfield and Bell Gardens Junior Varsity squads. .
