DENISON. FRIDAY MAY 17, 1878. Convention for County Offloes. At the time of the call of the county committee, to select delegates to the state and congressional con- ventions, the Nkws took occasion to express the opinion that the conven- tion should, as a part of its duties, nominate candidates to fill the var- ious county oilices. In this we were looking not only to the interests of the Denison precinct, but also to the interests of the Democratic party throughout the county. The News has never held to any other position. The Sherman Register, in a recent article, takes sides against nomina- tions, and gives, as its principal lea- son, that there is no chance of a Republican being elected in any event. This does not reach the point. It is the duty of Democracy, where :n the majority, to see to it that real representative Democrats are placed in office. And this can only be assured by uniting the Dem- ocratic vote on men whose loyalty to the party has been tried and prov- ed. Unfor...

The Daily flews. DENISON, SATURDAY MAY iS, 1878. To Denison Democrats. We have tried the "free race" plan in all our city elections hereto- fore, and to put it as mildly as pos- sible, the results have been far from satisfactory. The plan has given to the city a nondescript lot of officers, who leel no particular responsibility to any body, and who defy public opinion with the most refreshing nonchalance. In these scrub races it js not only doubtful whether the best man wins, but it is pretty well fettled he does not. We suggest that the Democrats of the city get together and select candidates for the offices to be filled at the June elec- tion, and run them as Demo- crats. Then let the Republican managers put out their champions, and wc will have the question set tied whether this is a Democratic or Radical town. After announcing the accidental drowning of old Tige, the bull that cleaned out the lions, the San Anto- nio Express adds: "The curse of heaven seems to have fallen upon e...

it i I The Daily Ilcius. DiaNIHON, TUESDAY MAY ai, 1878 j The most impudent tiling we have seen for a long time is the rcccnt manifesto of the Republican Con- gressional committee on the occa- sion of the passage of the resolution to investigate the frauds in Florida and Louisiana. The charge ot at- tempting to " Mexicanize" the gov- ernment comes with refreshing force from the same set of men who en- deavored to kick Andrew Johnson, a president of their own electing, out of ofliee, simply because lie dif- fered with them as to the policy of reconstruction. The Democrats may have differed as to the advisability of an investigation, but after this inso- lent proclamation from the hypocrit- ical shysters of the Republican par- ty, there should be but one determi- nation, viz: to put into tangible shape all the evidence that can be procured of the infamous frauds per- petrated in these States. We think the country can better stand the ex- citement attending the exposure of crime in hig...
