RANDOM RAMBLES [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

. n i, mi m m-T-"-**-??-*? RANDOM RAMBLES (By "The Gleaner.'*) "O, wad some Power the giftie gie us To see ourselves as ithers see us.** Were Bobhy Burns alive to-day and work ing at Canberra, I feel sure those words would be prominent in his mind, and he would add a prayer that some of those in charge of thc various jobs hereabouts be gifted with a sense of humour. "All men are liars,"* we know, and are prepared to tolerate a few in reason; but what is the use of trying to bolster up misleading statements by a show of authority. One feels inclined to stick a pin in them and say, *'Wake up and get the noise of the chain gang out of your ears; that died before you were born." An ounce of common sense will build more houses than a mile of red tape. Speaking of red tape calls to mind the fact that it is also connected with sealing wax. Reminds me of the time when I was young and romantic-how faint and faraway those days seem-and wishing to give my then-best girl an out-of-the-way expen...

BOXING CANBERRA'S FIRST RING CONTEST. MOST ENTERTAINING DISPLAY. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

BOXING CANBERRA'S FIRST RING CONTEST. MOST ENTERTAINING DISPLAY. (By "Felix.") As a result of the splendid entertainment that was given to lovers of the fistic art at the Causeway Hall on Thursday, 17th May, the thanks of all sportsmen in the community will go out to the Canberra Fire Brigade Recreation Club, which was responsible for the promotion of the contests. Although two ex cellent preliminaries were set down for deci sion, the main attraction, of course, was the bout between Bert Horne (Queanbeyan) and Jack Keogh (Canberra). The capacity of the hall was fully taxed when the proceedings commenced. Mr. Percy Douglas, who acted as an nouncer for the various events, set the ball rolling by giving a few explanatory remarks as to how that night's entertainment came into being. He stated that the contest was unique in the history of sport in the Capital City, inasmuch as it was the first of its kind held in Canberra. He added that his club was determined to maintain a high standard...

HEALTH NOTES CARE OF BABY. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

-4» HEALTH NOTES CARE OF BABY. The old Greek philosopher, Socrates, said that "in every work the beginning is the most important part, especially in dealing with anything young and tender.'' Let us therefore establish good habits in our babies from the day they are born the longer we leave it, the more bad ones we shall have to cure, for there is nothing on earth more "cute" than a tiny baby. Let us make it our special care to see that they are kindlily, but wisely and firmly, guided through thc months and years of babyhood and early childhood, so that they get their quiet, regular life, no matter how much sacri fice it means on our part. Â young healthy baby should sleep the clock round from 6 p.m., when he should be undressed, washed, and fed, until 6 o'clock the next morning, with only one disturbance at 10 p.m., when he may be fed and made comfortable al most without being roused. Another sleep should follow the 6 a,m. feed, and then he will be ready for a warm bath, gontly but ...

CHILDREN'S COMMITTEE. MORE PLAYGROUNDS. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

CHILDREN'S COMMITTEE. MORE PLAYGROUNDS. The aim of this Committee, to provide well-equipped and up-to-date playgrounds for the children in the various centres of Canberra, is well on the way to realisation. -»«-_I«-II-1«-H-M-M-»I-ll-«I-II-«I-«»-»»--J' On Saturday last residents of Ainslie were given an opportunity to show their prowess with pick and shovel, saw and hammer, with the result that the children of Ainslie now possess a well laid out playground, which should prove a boon to them. The new playing area is centrally situated, and is immediately opposite the tennis courts; so those mothers who enjoy a set of tennis, will be able to do so at the same time as their chilreu indulge in the delights of swinging, see-sawing, etc. The organisatioin of the necessary volun tary labour in order to bring the Ainslie project to fruition was entrusted to the local Social Service committee, under the energetic guidance of the Hon. Secretary, Mr. P. J. McNamara]. Mesdames Sands and Honeyset...

OUTDOOR RECREATION COMMITTEE THE BAND. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

OUTDOOR RECREATION COMMITTEE THE BAND. An important meeting of tue uuiaooi was held on Wednesday last, when various matters affecting the progress of the Com mittee's activities were discussed. One of the main items for determination was the question of future management of the Canberra Brass Band. The Band ap pointed three delegates, Messrs. Ben. Kelly, Pearl, and White, to meet the Outdoor Committee, and submit the proposed con stitution for the Band, which practically has for its objects the management of the Band by a duly elected Baud Committee. There are many first class instrumentalists now in our midst, and as a result of the con ference with the Outdoor Committee, the band hope to embark upon a progressive policy of entertainment, which will enable them to become practically self-supporting. As soon as the Band is efficiently organised, it is intended to render suitable programmes at the various camps and contres on Sun day afternoons. OUTDOOR RECREATION. Work is now in han...

M--ll«-*«--M--M-»«-M-«a-»««-«.-»««-»».--M^-M-II i i .. THE ROOF OF AUSTRALIA (TANBERRA RESIDENTS VISIT MOUNT KOSCIUSKO. During the King's Birthday holiday week end the opportunity was taken by a party of twenty local residents to spend a short but most enjoyable holiday amid the snow-clad slopes of Australia's highest peak. It is* hoped that the tour, which was arranged by the Social Service Officer through the Tourist Bureau, Sydney, will be the forerunner of many such enjoyable trips. After breakfast had been taken at Cooma on the forward journey, special service cars were in readiness to take the party over the 60-mile journey to the Hotel Kosciusko. The tourists were particularly impressed with the natural beauty of the mountain scenery, and the splendid road from Cooma to the moun tain-undoubtedly a boon for motorists. Upon arrival at the hotel, some members of the party were disappointed that the snow was only lying in certain drifts, as one and all were anxious to tackle the ...

HEALTH NOTES [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 August 1926

HEALTH NOTES (By "Sister.") Ju spite of care and good management, baby will have his share of aches and pains like the rest of us, and in this month's article I want to mention some ailments from which a baby may suffer, and to help you if I can, to cure, or at least to improve, them. But please remember that it is always far wiser to call in a doctor at once when the trouble does not respond to simple and commonsense remedies, than alternately to tinker with and neglect the small things until they become per haps too big for even a doctor to mend suc cessfully. Personally, I have the greatest faith in the old saying, "A stitch in time saves nine. ' ' You may save years of pain and sn fte ri ag, perhaps even a life-time of ill health, by correcting at once thc early symp toms, and by being what some people might even call a little too fussy. Colic.-If baby is restless, grunting and kicking, drawing his little thighs tight up against his body, and screaming violently, with a wrinkled...
