AT HEADQUARTERS. The Paris Commune. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 24 March 1900

HT HEADQUARTERS. The Paris Commune. Once again the necessity of somehow providing further seat ing accommodation was forcibly pressed on the attention of the Central Branch on Sunday night last. Sunday, March 18, was the 2!Hh anniversary of the Paris Commune, and the celebration was a further evidence of the deeper current of feeling amoog Australian Socialists compared with which that existed a few years ago. Comrade Eyre, secretary In ternational Socialists' Club, was in charge of the lecture upon the Commune. He found himself hampered by time, but gave the audience an ...

OPEN COLUMN. Election of General Executive. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 24 March 1900

OPEN COLUMN. Election of General Executive. TO THE EDITOR. Comrade, — Of the names of candi dates published last week those of Comrades Eyre, Stephenson, and Joyce, have been withdrawn at their request. Ballot papers are now in the hands of members, and are re turnable not later than Thursday, April 5. For General Secretary, Com rade C. M. Barlow, and for General Treasurer, S. C. Clark respectively have no opposition. Eight members of the Committee are required, and members must vote for not more and not less than eight, otherwise the ballot paper will be in formal. One disadvantage members labor under jb owing to the distance between branches, it is impossible for members to know all the candidates, or to be acquainted with the work they are doing or are capable of. But to propose that members should be allowed to vote for less than eight would be to give an undue advantage to those candidates whose work is of that nature that it is re corded in such a way that all mem bers become ...

DREDGE SERVICE. INFLUENCE & INCAPACITY. HOW OUR CAPITALIST MASTERS MANIPULATE NATIONAL INDUSTRIES. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 31 March 1900

DREDGE SBRYI6E. INFLUENCE & I ^CAPACITY. HOW OUR CAPITALIST MASTERS MANIPULATE NATIONAL INDUSTRIES. An extra and altogether useless expenditure is rendered necessary in the N. S. W. Dredge Service by the fact that in many cases men obtain responsible positions by reason of their crawling ability rather than because of their competency. Because of this incompetency buckets have not -infrequently been lost over by the side ; and, as everyone knows, that means a stoppage of operations, and the employment of a diver tr. find the buckets. Concerning the breakdowns on the dredges, it is alleged that a majority of these occur because of changing men from various I positions. For instance, men who have a term of service (pos sibly in a sand pump or any other branch of the service) and are consequently due for a 'rise,' must accept the first promotion offered them, or go to the bottom of the list and probably never again get another chance. Under this system 'length of ser vice' in t...
