VIOLET TOWN RACES. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 14 January 1870

'VIOLET TOWN RACES. This little meeting came off on Monday and Tuesday last, on the Violet Town Racco tree.' situated about three miles to the west of the town ship. The course is about one mile round, only the runnine being cleared, and as all the rest of the land Is very thickly covered with timber, only a very obscure view can be had of the horses running, unless going out and coming in. There are one or two matters which the stewards of next year should try to remedy-namely, the dreadful delay between the different races; people continually galloping around the course, until as on this occasion it becare a regular dust hole I and lastly, the nasty saplings which they termed hurdles, and which were the cause of two very ugly -accidents at this meeting; the one fatal to a valuable mare, the property of Mr. Lundy, which he was trying over them, intend ing her for the hurdle race, but at the second or third attempt she came down and broke her nick. The next sand accident being in th...

The Benalla Ensign. Published Weekly. BENALLA, FRIDAY, JAN. 14, 1870. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 14 January 1870

: Published Weekly. Il3ENALLA, FRIDAY, JAN. 14, 1870. "T?a meeting of Saturday last' was very suc cesful in more respects than one. Not satis 'fled with merely getting under way what pro mides to be a good race meeting for 1870, those present entered upon the whole question of racing with a heartiness which promises well for future and lasting success. The idea is that the races ought to be made soelf-supporting, --but they now suffer in consequence of an in. .i cubus of debt of.£20 for: fencing, which still remains unpaid, the interest on which con Ssumes the amount innuallyderivable from cn rtrances to the courso. at the race meetings; We do not know whose idea it is (Mr. WaeVrs's if wo.'mistake not) to endeavour by one great effort to remove this debt altogether, and thus ' give to the stewards the opportunity of carry ing on without getting into debt, but it is novertheless a good. one, and deserves cordial support. Put briefly, the proposition stands thus. To invite contributio...

MANSFIELD POLICE COURT. Friday, December 31. (Before Dr. Rowe, and Messrs. Kitchen and Smith.) [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 14 January 1870

MANSFIELD POLICE COURT. Friday, December 31. (Before Dr. Rowe, and Messrs. Kitchen and Smith.) Jane Broekman v. Ah Heong. Assault, damages laid at £20. Mr. Molyneux for plaintiff; Mr. O'Leary   for defendant. Mr. O'Leary objected to Mr. Molyneux appearing in court for the plaintiff in this case, and referred the Bench to the 44th section of the Justices of the Peace Statute in support of his argument. He said that he raised the objection not from any spirit of ill feeling or opposition, but merely because he felt it due to the profession to which he had the honour to belong, inasmuch as he considered that Mr. Molyneux had no locus standi in that court. The Bench, however, had formerly decided that they possessed a perfect right to extend permission to appear for clients. Acting on that opinion they gave Mr. Molyneux leave to act as agent in the court, conditionally that the permission be considered cancelled in the event of two qualified legal practitioners settling in ...
