OUE STOBtT COLUMN. 1 The Drummer. 3Y JAMES WILKINSON. (Continued.) ' In his dilemjma, my father ap plied to the corjimamdant at Xsw castle for a mari competent to see him through. { ''Weil, I Have a man .here, Mr. ? who hajs all the requisite knowledge. We call him ' The Drummer': he was a drummer in a marine corps on lone.of.her Majesty's ships, but got tiansported to Botany Bay for .some offence, or other, I don't know wha-t ; but. he is a most incorrigible scqmndrel. - He- has been assigned out several times, but always comes back with a report that gets him !a flogging.' But I never saw a bettjer hand on board a boat, and he knows every inch of the river. You |may take him if you like, but I wouliji warn you to keep a sharp eye on him and not to go about unarmed. ' And so Dqimmer was handed over to my father. After the vessel had got fairly under way, the latter called the man ajside. Wanted—a Medical Man. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 9 October 1903

Wanted— a IVIedicalMan. There is not, we venture to say.^in Queensland, another district where the need of a meiical man in the midst of its people is so sorely needed as the northern end' of East Moreton. Here the liability to accident is great through falling trees aud limbs, Avhilst the mimber, of cases requiring attention thrjough gun accidents riding accidents, and such like are innumerable. Should an accident happen, and the case is at all serious, it means either a case for the Brisbane or Gympie Hospitals, according to the earliest train going either way. Mr. Crofts has done good and useful service, we admit, and should be able to do the same for. many a day to come, but he could, we un hesitatingly say, do double the good with the assistance of a medical practitioner. Mr. Crofts feels, as most men feel, where a case is serious, that the re sponsibility of one's life is too great for one to bear, and so often, more often than other wise would be the case, has the victim of a...

Amateur Painters. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 9 October 1903

Amateur Painters. Some time ago the Railway Department wrote the station masters along the North Coast line asking them if they would be prepared to paint their stations sheuld the paint be forwarded. We do not know what replies were sent in, but so far we notice that very little paint has beeii used. From this we judge that the officers have not been agreeable, or ad mit their incapability for the task. Anyhow, this system, if carried out, w-j-uld have been much more costly to the depart- { ment, because; the men would have wasted, unintentionally we are prepared to admit, more paint than the work would have cost if donel:-3r tradesmen. Then there is the mixing of the -paints. Some stations, had the work been done according to the wish of the department, might have had the appearance of one 6f Jacob's lost coats.

The Federal Rolls. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 9 October 1903

The Federal Rolls. We cannot jcongratulate the Federal authorities for one moment or the form in which they have issiied' f: e electoral rolls. Lists ariji sent to all places, it is true,; but as an ex ample we take the Nambour list, which only j contains the Nambour names, :iso that should a man^ have shifted his resi dence from |yiitllo or suchlike place to Namlpoujr, he is just as wis 2 as'he was previously. Then again, a number 'of the Image Flat electors are Ion the Nani bour list, and cithers on the Image Flat, thoiugh there is. only the one polling place. It would have been far better, and more convergent, had the list been compiled in the State electorates and -exhibited as such. As they 4re at present constituted the}' iare simply a farce and mislearling to num bers, and we feel-confident that numbers that: art: at preseut on the roll will make fresh appli cation to be put on again.
