Query. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 16 February 1914

Query. The waitress was looking absent mindedly at liim, and the immaculate youth was under the impression that be had succeeded in making a con quest. "A penny for your thoughts, Gertie," he said, gaily. "I was just wondering," replied the ■were a steak pudding, a curried fowl, or a stewed rabbit." "How much is your fiance worth?" asked the matter-of-fact father of his romantic daughter. ■'Oh," replied the latter, enthusias tically, "my Fred is worth millions on millions." "Of course; but I mean how much Is he worth in cold cash?" "Well, he has £1 15/- in the Post Office Savings Bank." "Yes," said the young father; "we are pretty busy at our house now. We're moving." "Moving! Where?" "Moving everything out of baby's reach. He's beginning to crawl." There is nothing that will rest you so quickly as to sit on a straight-back chair and, lifting the feet from the floor, push thern out in front of you as far as possible, stretch the arms, put the head back, open tile mouth wide and make...

SILVESTER OVAL To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 16 February 1914

SILVESTER OVAL To the Editor. Sir,—Life is too short, and your space too limited, to occupy my self in replying to such matter—twaddle I count it—as emanated from your correspondent, signed " True Sport." Many years ago the Eight Hon.AV. E. Gladstone, when harassed by an interjector in the House of Commons, replied as follows :—" Providence, in His Almighty wisdom, has made two classes of insects, one whose mission it is to bite, and its victim is left conscious of a sense of irritation and pain ; the other insect also bites, but its victim is left unconscious of hav ing been bitten. The bon. member resembles the latter rather than the former class of insect." The above rebuke applies to True Sport. - —Tours, etc., STEPHEN DAVIES. [This controversy having reached, if it lias not exceeded, the boundary of the original points in dispute, its continuance can serve 110 further useful purpose.—Ei>.]

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES. THE BUSINESS MAN. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 16 February 1914

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES. I HE BUSINESS MAN. By Mrs. A. M. Gamage Pv much has been written already so luueii advice given oil the subject of managing a husband (generally by lliii unmarried J, that there £oes not seem very much left for me to say on the all-iiispwriant question of how to keep the ;:uurimoniaI barometer at. "set fair" year in year oui,' Personally X am not very keen on the idea of -inaria^ini" anyone. The word does not toiijure up ;tuy very pleasant suggestions, lor we all know the picture which i:> invariably drawn of the managing woman—a picture which leaves no doubt in the mind of anyone that she "manages" chiefly .to make husband, children, and every one about her 'generally uncomfort able. I should be inclined to say that the best way to manage a husband is to let him manage liinis:-'f, for, while every man likes to be fussed over and spoilt, when it comes to all-im portant questions he generally pre fers to settle things for himself. I am not suggesting that he ...

From time to time to time I have tried to warn you. Optical Fakers are in the country every week. Reliable men do not travel from house to house. If you get " bit " you have no one to blame but yourself. Til addition to the swindling done by such grafters, the harm and in juries they sell cannot be over estimated. i The people should consider carefully the reputation and honesty of the man i whom they entrust with their eyes. j I visit your town every eight weeks and hold consultations at the Koroite Inn. THE SECRET OF LONG LIFE. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 16 February 1914

THE SECRET OF LONG LIFE. " Life " for March contains a spe cial article of exceptional interest describing the wonderful operations performed bjr Sir Arbuthnot W. Lane —a famous London surgeon—in short circuiting the intestines as a cure for extreme constipation and diseases due to it. A woman went to Guy's Hospital, London, in a deplorable state of health, apparently dying. She was thin, could take no food, and was covered with'open sores. She was, moreover, not a cheerful invalid, but was terribly depressed. Several doctors had failed to diagnose her case, but Dr. Lane decided that the trouble lay in her intestines. He operated, and found that part of her colon (sometimes known as the ox bow) was in a bad way, so he cut it clean away and joined up the ends. ' Within twenty-four hours the patient ceased to bo melancholic. In a short while the natural processes began again, and she improved rapidly. Meanwhile, her sores which had not been treated at all, healed up, her spirits rose,...

KONONGWOOTONG SOUTH HALL. To the Editor. Sir,—Tenders for the construction of the South Konongwootong Hull were called for on the 22nd ult., re ceivable up to February 2nd, subject to a deposit of 5 per cent. On the 1st February, 191-t, 1 handed in my tender, accompanied by the condition al deposit. To my positive knowledge my ten der was the only one received on or before the 2nd February, and from what I can gather it wr.s opened. T was informed that as my tender was the only one in on the date specified, I was certain to get the job, but strange to say, I have since found out that another contractor was asked to tender afier the closing time, and his tender was unaccompanied by any de posit, and since llien my deposit has been returned. Now, Mr. Editor, if th facts areas above, do you think this fair conduct to an}' contractor to lie treated in such a shabby fashion ?'
