The Castlemaine Mail. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1917. [Newspaper Article] — Castlemaine Mail — 16 October 1917

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1'J17. (Machine .politics 'is in a great meas ure responsible for so many medioc rities occupying seats' in the Legislat ive Assembly, to the detriment of the country. The machine has had a baneful influence on American politics, and it 'is daily getting a 'firmer hold in Victoria. ' It was hoped by many that the preferential voting system would prove a check to the machine, but such hopes have not materialised, and at the coming State elections it will .be found that, when the num'bers go up machine nominees will be largely -in. the maj ority. The old freedom in t'he selection ! of a candidate does not exist. The {•party machine interferes in every elee | ioraie. ilt. may be 'the right thing -for the party, but it is the wrong thing for the iountry, and that 'is the crux of the whole situation, The maohinc, iu fact ] politicians generally are more devoted to the welfare of ttoe party than the welfare of tlie country, otherwise they would 'be committing politica...

ONLY SIX OUT OF A THOUSAND. [Newspaper Article] — Castlemaine Mail — 16 October 1917

ONiLY SIX OUT OF A TiiOL'SAXL). According to iDr. Davidson, one of the .famous surgeons in .His ..Majesty's service in 'India, only six cases oi ap pendicitis were found in about one ■thousand major operations upon the 'natives. This observation agrees <with other authorities who have noted the •absence of appendicitis among people •whose diet keeps them free from con stipation. Constipation has frequently been as signed as a direct cause for appendici tis, and many people 'nave endeavored ■to overcome it by the use of laxatives and habit-forming drugs. iXU.JOL, an internal lubricant, is the ideal remedy for constipation. XU.IOL is manufac tured by the Standard Oil Company (Xew .Jersey), U.S.A. It is a lubricant, •not a medicine or a drug, and is not absorbed by the system. It does not gripe or interfere w:;h digestion. Plea sant to take. -For sale ,by Philnots and •Coakley, C:istletn;iine.
