The Borough Roller. Satisfactory Test. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 20 June 1914

The Borough Roller. Satisiactorv Test. The obtaining of a combined motor roller anrd tractor by the Oekleigh Borough Council has created remarkable diversity of opinion among the ratepayers. Many condemned it outright as useless and a waste of money others suspended judgment until it had been given a fair trial, wh'ci was no doubt the most rea sonable attitude to adopt. We pointed out several defects, which were also apparent to councillors, chiefly that the lack of sufficient weight on the front \vhoees materi ally lessened its value as a road roller. Aa a tracter its power was proved heco ndl rlqestion whlen it drew with ease t4 tons up Fern tree Gully road hill. The council had an interview at its Inst neei- ing with Mir McDonald, who inu dertook to equalise the weight and bring it up to 9 tons, besides nmak ing seceral small adlitions to im prove the eficiency of the machine as a road roller. In addition the council passed a resolution that the roller, after undergoing these alt...

Brevities. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 20 June 1914

Brevitler. Oaklcich v. Richmond District on the local grounid this afternoon, will be the game of the season -Roll up! The players should bear in mind the foilowving-"Oakleigh expects every man this day to do his duty" and have ever the idea "we Iuste win" in each player's mind and the day is won. Oakleigh are now only four points behind Coburg (last year's premiers), who occupy fifth posi tion on the list. Should the locals defeat Rich mond District this afternoon they will still retain the same position Coburg having an easy match. A decided change in the position of the clubs will no doubt be looked for on the following Saturday - Oakleigh should beat Everleigh ; Melbourne District on present form will no doubt account for Coburg. If this should prove the case, Oak leigh will be even with Coburg for fifth nlace. The local team, all going well with the players, should gain first four honors and I predict seven close finishes and victories for the purple and gold lads out of the re...
